Abstract

A solar power plant includes a solar tracker supporting solar modules with the solar tracker supported on a first end by a first pier and on a second end by a second pier. A drive device is coupled to the solar tracker and configured to rotate the solar tracker about an axis. An energy storage unit is supported by the solar tracker between the first pier and the second pier with the energy storage unit configured to power the drive device. The solar tracker also includes a controller in communication with a memory with the memory storing instructions thereon that when executed by the controller, cause the controller to: receive forecast data for the solar power plant; determine, based on the forecast data, a diffuse angle adjustment; and output a signal to the drive device to rotate the solar tracker to a desired angle based on the diffuse angle adjustment.

Claims (31)

1 . A solar power plant comprising:

a solar tracker supporting solar modules, the solar tracker supported on a first end by a first pier and on a second end by a second pier;

a drive device coupled to the solar tracker and configured to rotate the solar tracker about an axis;

an energy storage unit supported by the solar tracker between the first pier and the second pier, the energy storage unit configured to power the drive device; and

a controller in communication with a memory, the memory storing instructions thereon that when executed by the controller cause the controller to:

receive forecast data for the solar power plant;

determine, based on the forecast data, a diffuse angle adjustment; and

output a signal to the drive device to rotate the solar tracker to a desired angle based on the diffuse angle adjustment.

2 . The solar power plant of claim 1 , further comprising a power strip supported by the solar tracker and configured to charge the energy storage unit.

3 . The solar power plant of claim 2 , wherein the power strip is supported by the solar tracker between the first pier and the second pier.

4 . The solar power plant of claim 2 , further comprising a topography module in communication with the controller and the power strip, the topography module configured to gather shading information of the power strip, the power strip comprising a solar panel.

5 . The solar power plant of claim 1 , wherein the controller is further configured to, before outputting the signal to the drive device to rotate the solar tracker to the desired angle based on the diffuse angle adjustment:

determine a solar tracker target angle based on a topography of the solar power plant; and

output a signal to the drive device to rotate the solar tracker to the solar tracker target angle.

6 . The solar power plant of claim 5 , wherein the diffuse angle adjustment is a gain factor applied to the solar tracker target angle.

7 . The solar power plant of claim 5 , wherein the memory further stores the topography of the solar power plant.

8 . The solar power plant of claim 5 , wherein the controller is configured determine the solar tracker target angle based additionally on a sun position angle.

9 . The solar power plant of claim 8 , wherein the sun position angle is calculated from a latitude and longitude of the solar tracker and a time of day.

10 . The solar power plant of claim 1 , wherein the controller further executes an instruction to determine whether the solar tracker is in a backtracking mode.

11 . The solar power plant of claim 1 , wherein when in a backtracking mode, the diffuse angle adjustment is a diffuse backtracking angle adjustment.

12 . The solar power plant of claim 1 , further comprising a local solar measurement device, the local solar measurement device in communication with the controller and configured to capture weather data for a desired time period.

13 . The solar power plant of claim 12 , wherein the controller is further configured to:

monitor the weather data; and

limit movement of the solar tracker when diffuse sunlight is detected.

14 . The solar power plant of claim 12 , wherein the local solar measurement device is a photovoltaic reference cell.

15 . The solar power plant of claim 1 , wherein the diffuse angle adjustment modifies a solar tracker target angle based on a sun position angle.

16 . The solar power plant of claim 15 , wherein the diffuse angle adjustment is a gain factor applied to the solar tracker target angle.

17 . The solar power plant of claim 15 , wherein the controller further executes an instruction to determine whether the solar tracker is in a backtracking mode.

18 . The solar power plant of claim 17 , wherein when in the backtracking mode, the diffuse angle adjustment is a diffuse backtracking angle adjustment.

19 . The solar power plant of claim 1 , wherein the forecast data is received periodically.

20 . The solar power plant of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to use a diffuse fraction index to determine the diffuse angle adjustment.
