Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method of alleviating symptoms of ocular surface discomfort, the method comprising: topically applying a cold slurry adjacent to a corneal limbus of an eye of a patient, wherein the cold slurry comprises water and a freezing point depressant, wherein the topical application of the cold slurry is configured to cause a degree of numbing of a cornea of the eye for a period of time, and wherein an ocular sensation of the eye is restored following the period of time.

Claims (31)

1 . A device for cooling one or more areas of therapeutic effect of an eye of a subject, the device comprising:

a body comprising a thermally conductive material,

a cavity that is configured to contain a cold slurry; and

one or more contact points,

wherein the one or more contact points are configured to contact the eye at the one or more areas of therapeutic effect and cool the areas of therapeutic effect for a period of time.

2 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more areas of therapeutic effect comprise a region adjacent to a corneal limbus of the eye.

3 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more contact points are further configured to prevent contact with a cornea of the eye.

4 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the one or more areas of therapeutic effect comprises a bulbar conjunctiva and/or a sclera.

5 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to provide a barrier against direct contact between the cold slurry contained in the cavity and the eye.

6 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is further configured to be operable with a protective device comprising a thermally non-conductive material.

7 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the protective device is configured to protect a cornea of the eye.

8 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to contact the eye at the one or more areas of therapeutic effect and cool the areas of therapeutic effect for about 2 minutes to about 10 minutes.

9 . The device of claim 6 , wherein the protective device is configured to protect one or more eyelids of the eye.

10 . The device of claim 9 , wherein the protective device is a speculum.

11 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to contact the eye at the one or more areas of therapeutic effect and cool the areas of therapeutic effect for about 4 minutes to about 15 minutes.

12 . The device of claim 1 , wherein the device is configured to contact the eye at the one or more areas of therapeutic effect and cool the areas of therapeutic effect to a temperature of between about −6° C. and about 4° C.

13 . A method of reducing ocular surface discomfort of an eye of a subject, the method comprising:

cooling one or more regions of therapeutic effect of the eye of the subject for a treatment time sufficient to alleviate ocular surface discomfort,

wherein the one or more regions of therapeutic effect comprise a sclera of the eye.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the one or more regions of therapeutic effect further comprise a region adjacent to a corneal limbus of the eye.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the cooling one or more regions of therapeutic effect comprises cooling the one or more regions of therapeutic effect to below about 4° C., and the treatment time is between about 1 minute and about 20 minutes.

16 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the cooling one or more regions of therapeutic effect comprises cooling the one or more regions of therapeutic effect to below about 0° C., and the treatment time is about 4 minutes.

17 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the cooling one or more regions of therapeutic effect comprises cooling the one or more regions of therapeutic effect to between about −6° C. and about 4° C.

18 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the cooling one or more regions of therapeutic effect comprises contacting the one or more regions of therapeutic effect with a device, wherein the device comprises:

a body comprising a thermally conductive material,

a cavity that is configured to contain a cold slurry; and

one or more contact points that are configured to contact the eye at the one or more areas of therapeutic effect.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the one or more areas of therapeutic effect comprise a region adjacent to a corneal limbus of the eye.

20 . The method of claim 13 wherein the ocular surface discomfort comprises chronic ocular surface pain and the cooling one or more regions of therapeutic effect reduces the chronic ocular surface pain.

21 . The method of claim 13 wherein the subject experiences a reduction in ocular surface discomfort for more than 2 days after the one or more regions of therapeutic effect of the eye have been cooled.

22 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the cooling one or more regions of therapeutic effect comprises cooling the one or more regions of therapeutic effect to below about 4° C., and the treatment time is between about 2 minutes and about 10 minutes.
