SURGICAL SYSTEM AND METHOD OF USE
Systems and devices for resecting and removing tissue or organs from the interior of a patient's body, in a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure while preventing any dispersion of potentially malignant tissue during the resection process.
1 . (canceled)
2 . A system for resecting tissue, the system comprising:
a probe comprising an inner sleeve, an outer sleeve, and a working end;
a cutting member located at the working end of the probe on the inner sleeve and exposed through a window in the outer sleeve;
a sensor system comprising an electrical component, the electrical component configured for detecting an electrically conductive material around an exterior of organ; and
a controller configured to:
provide an electrical current to the electrical component,
monitor impedance between the electrical component and the electrically conductive material,
detect, based on the impedance between the electrical component and the electrically conductive material, that the cutting member is approaching a surface of the organ, and
activate the cutting member to resect a volume of tissue from within the organ through the window using the cutting member.
3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the sensor system comprises at least one of a capacitance sensing mechanism, an impedance sensing mechanism, an optical sensing mechanism and an ultrasound mechanism.
4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the cutting member comprises a motor-driven cutting member.
5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the motor-driven cutting member includes a moveable blade edge configured for resecting tissue.
6 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the motor-driven cutting member includes an energy transmission element configured for resecting tissue.
7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the energy transmission element comprises at least one of an electrode element, a resistively heated element, an inductively heated element, an ultrasound transmission element and a light energy transmission element.
8 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller generates a signal when the motor-driven cutting member approaches the electrically conductive material, the signal comprising at least one of an aural, a visible or a tactile signal.
9 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to de-activate the motor-driven cutting member when the sensor system detects that the motor-driven cutting member is within a pre-determined proximity to the surface of the organ or the electrically conductive material.
10 . The system of claim 4 , wherein de-activating the motor-driven cutting member comprises at least one of stopping movement of the motor-driven cutting member or stopping energy delivery to the motor-driven cutting member.
11 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to modulate a speed of movement of the motor-driven cutting member in response to detecting that the motor-driven cutting member is within a pre-determined proximity to the surface of the organ or the electrically conductive material.
12 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the controller is configured to modulate energy delivery to the motor-driven cutting member in response to detecting that the motor-driven cutting member is within a pre-determined proximity to the surface of the organ.
13 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the motor-driven cutting member is moveable relative to the window by at least one of rotation and reciprocation of the inner sleeve relative to the outer sleeve.
14 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the electrically conductive material comprises a stretchable structure positioned around an exterior of the organ.
15 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the electrically conductive material has a thin wall.
