Abstract

A method and system for in situ cross-linking of polymers, Bitumen, and other materials to produce arbitrary functional or ornamental three-dimensional features using electron beams provided by mobile accelerators comprises defining a desired pattern for imparting on a target area, mapping the target area, defining at least one discrete voxel in the target area according to the desired pattern to be imparted on the target area, assigning an irradiation value to each of the at least one discrete voxels, and delivering a dose of irradiation to each of the at least one discrete voxels according to the assigned irradiation value.

Claims (26)

1 . A method for fabricating structures comprising:

receiving, at a computer system, a design of a structure;

assigning each voxel associated with the design of the structure an irradiation dose;

depositing cross-linking material over a build surface for the structure; and

selectively irradiating locations with the cross-linking material to complete a layer of the structure.

2 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 1 further comprising:

depositing additional cross-linking material; and

selectively irradiating locations with the additional cross-linking material to complete additional layers of the structure.

3 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 1 wherein selectively irradiating locations with the cross-linking material to complete a layer of the structure further comprises:

providing a required irradiation dose of irradiation for each voxel associated with the design of the structure.

4 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 1 wherein selectively irradiating locations with the cross-linking material further comprises:

selectively irradiating locations with an electron accelerator on a mobile unit.

5 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 4 wherein selectively irradiating locations with an electron accelerator on a mobile unit further comprises:

driving the mobile unit over the build surface.

6 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 5 wherein driving the mobile unit over the build surface further comprises:

driving the mobile unit remotely.

7 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 4 further comprising:

deploying at least one sensor on the mobile unit;

receiving, at the computer system, a location of the mobile unit based on the at least one sensor on the mobile unit;

wherein selectively irradiating locations with the cross-linking material comprises irradiating each voxel associated with the design based on the location of the mobile unit.

8 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 7 further comprising:

adjusting a duty cycle of the electron accelerator according to at least one of a speed and a location of the mobile unit.

9 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 1 further comprising:

preparing the build surface for fabrication.

10 . The method for fabricating structures of claim 9 wherein preparing the build surface for fabrication further comprises:

securing a border around the build surface.
