Abstract

There is provided a method of differentiating between a strain and a contraction of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) of a subject. The method comprises receiving data generated by an orientation sensor provided within a vaginal probe device that is located within the vaginal canal of the subject; utilizing a processor to process data generated by the orientation sensor to determine a direction of rotation of the vaginal probe device during a measurement period. When the processor determines that the vaginal probe device has rotated in the cranial-ventral direction relative to the subject, an output is generated indicating that there has been a contraction of the PFM during the measurement period; and when the processor determines that the vaginal probe device has rotated in the caudal-dorsal direction relative to the subject, an output is generated indicating that there has been a strain of the PFM during the measurement period.

Claims (49)

1 . A pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training system comprising:

a vaginal probe device comprising:

a housing configured to be located within the vaginal canal of a subject, the housing comprising a shape configured to maintain the housing within the vaginal canal of the subject subsequent to locating the probe device within the vaginal canal of the subject,

a force sensor located within the housing and configured to generate force data, and

an orientation sensor located within the housing and configured to monitor an orientation of the probe device within the vaginal canal; and

a processor configured to communicate with the probe device, the processor further being configured to:

receive the force data generated by the force sensor,

utilize the force data to determine an initiation of a PFM movement by detecting a compressive force acting on the probe device, and

at the determination of the initiation of the PFM movement, activate the orientation sensor to monitor the orientation of the probe device.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the probe device is configured to maintain its orientation relative to the longitudinal axis of the vaginal canal such that a movement of the vaginal canal causes a corresponding movement of the probe device.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the housing is asymmetrical across a central lateral axis of the housing.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the housing comprises an ovoid shape portion having a nose portion.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the housing comprises an ovoid shape portion having a tail portion.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to generate an output through at least one of a user interface/display device, a haptic feedback device, or an audio output device.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the processor is provided in an external device.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the orientation sensor comprises an accelerometer configured to generate accelerometer data to determine a movement of the probe device.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the probe device further comprises:

one or more protrusions, the one or more protrusions configured to protrude from the housing and be located outside the vaginal canal while the housing is located within the vaginal canal.

10 . A pelvic floor muscle (PFM) training system comprising:

a vaginal probe device comprising:

a housing configured to be located within a vaginal canal of a subject, and

an accelerometer located within the housing, the accelerometer comprising a first axis parallel to a longitudinal axis of the housing and configured to generate first accelerometer data and second accelerometer data based on movement of the probe device relative to the first axis; and

a processor configured to communicate with the probe device, the processor further being configured to:

receive the first accelerometer data and the second accelerometer data generated by the accelerometer,

utilize the first accelerometer data and the second accelerometer data to calibrate the probe device for (a) noise within the subject when the probe device is within the vaginal canal and (b) noise within the probe device when the probe device is external to the vaginal canal, and

utilize the first accelerometer data and the second accelerometer data to determine whether the probe device has moved,

wherein the housing comprises a shape configured to maintain the orientation of the probe device relative to a longitudinal axis of the vaginal canal of the subject subsequent to locating the probe device within the vaginal canal of the subject.

11 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

utilize the first accelerometer data to determine a first orientation of the probe device,

utilize the second accelerometer data to determine a second orientation of the probe device, and

determine a change in an orientation of the probe device based on a comparison of the first orientation and the second orientation.

12 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the accelerometer comprises a second axis defined relative to the housing and perpendicular to the first axis, and

wherein the accelerometer is further configured to generate the first acceleration data and the second acceleration data based on movement of the probe device relative to the second axis.

13 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the vaginal probe device is asymmetrical across a central lateral axis of the housing.

14 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the probe device further comprises:

one or more protrusions, the one or more protrusions configured to protrude from the housing and be located outside the vaginal canal while the housing is located within the vaginal canal.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein a protrusion of the one or more protrusions comprises wiring.

16 . The system of claim 10 , further comprising:

a force sensor located within the housing and configured to detect a compressive force acting on the probe device.

17 . The system of claim 10 , wherein the processor is configured to generate an output through at least one of a user interface/display device, a haptic feedback device, or an audio output device.

18 . A method for training a pelvic floor muscle (PFM), the method comprising:

inserting a vaginal probe device within the vaginal canal of the subject, the probe device comprising a housing and a force sensor located within the housing, the force sensor configured to generate force data;

utilizing a shape of the probe device to align the probe device with the longitudinal axis of the vaginal canal;

receiving the force data generated by the force sensor;

determining an initiation of a PFM movement by detecting a compressive force acting on the probe device based on the force data; and

when the initiation of the PFM movement is determined, activating an orientation sensor to monitor an orientation of the probe device within the vaginal canal.
