Abstract

Apparatuses are disclosed which include a lamp assembly having a germicidal lamp configured to emit ultraviolet light and a base supporting the germicidal lamp. The apparatuses further include a support structure holding operational components for the apparatus and an automated actuator for moving the base and the germicidal lamp relative to the support structure. In addition, the apparatuses include a processor and a storage medium having program instructions which are executable by the processor for activating the automated actuator such that the base and the germicidal lamp are repositioned relative to the support structure while the germicidal lamp is emitting ultraviolet light.

Claims (41)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a lamp assembly, comprising:

a germicidal lamp configured to emit ultraviolet light;

a base supporting the germicidal lamp; and

a housing surrounding the germicidal lamp, wherein one or more sidewalls of the housing are transparent to ultraviolet light;

wheels along a bottom of the apparatus, wherein the lamp assembly is vertically arranged when the wheels are arranged on a floor of a room or area;

a support structure holding operational components for the apparatus;

an automated actuator for moving the lamp assembly relative to the support structure;

a user interface arranged along an exterior surface of the support structure;

a processor; and

a storage medium having program instructions which are executable by the processor for:

activating the germicidal lamp subsequent to receiving input from the user interface to conduct a disinfection process; and

activating the automated actuator such that the lamp assembly is repositioned relative to the support structure while the germicidal lamp is emitting ultraviolet light.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a reflector arranged at an elevation above the lamp assembly when the wheels are arranged on the floor of the room or area.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least some light generated by the germicidal lamp is propagated to a region exterior to the apparatus which is between approximately 2 feet and approximately 4 feet from the floor of the room or area.

The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising one or more additional germicidal lamps, wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least some light generated by the germicidal lamp and the one or more additional germicidal lamps is propagated to a region which encircles an exterior surface of the apparatus and further such that the light propagated to the encircling region during a disinfection process collectively occupies an entirety of the encircling region.

The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a system for collecting data regarding characteristics of the room or area, wherein the program instructions are further for retrieving the data and determining one or more operating parameters for the apparatus to conduct a disinfection process in the room or area based on the data.

6. An apparatus, comprising:

a germicidal lamp configured to emit ultraviolet light;

a base supporting the germicidal lamp;

a support structure holding operational components for the apparatus;

wheels along a bottom of the apparatus;

an automated linear actuator for moving the base and the germicidal lamp in a vertical direction relative to the support structure;

a processor; and

a storage medium having program instructions which are executable by the processor for activating the automated linear actuator such that the germicidal lamp is repositioned relative to the support structure while the germicidal lamp is emitting ultraviolet light.

7. The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising a reflector arranged at an elevation above the germicidal lamp when the germicidal lamp is arranged above the support structure.

The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least some light generated by the germicidal lamp is propagated to a region exterior to the apparatus which is between approximately 2 feet and approximately 4 feet from a floor of a room or area in which the apparatus is arranged.

The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising a system for collecting data regarding characteristics of a room or area, wherein the program instructions are further for retrieving the data and determining one or more operating parameters for the apparatus to conduct a disinfection process in the room or area based on the data.

10. An apparatus, comprising:

multiple germicidal lamps configured to emit ultraviolet light, wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least some light generated by the multiple germicidal lamps is propagated to a region which encircles the apparatus and further such that the light propagated to the encircling region during a disinfection process collectively occupies an entirety of the encircling region;

a base supporting the multiple germicidal lamps;

a support structure holding operational components for the apparatus;

wheels along a bottom of the apparatus;

an automated actuator for moving the base and the multiple germicidal lamps relative to the support structure;

a processor; and

a storage medium having program instructions which are executable by the processor for activating the automated actuator such that the base and the multiple germicidal lamps are repositioned relative to the support structure while the multiple germicidal lamps are emitting ultraviolet light.

The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the apparatus is configured such that at least some light generated by the multiple germicidal lamps is propagated to a region exterior to the apparatus which is between approximately 2 feet and approximately 4 feet from a floor of a room or area in which the apparatus is arranged.

The apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising a system for collecting data regarding characteristics of a room or area, wherein the program instructions are further for retrieving the data and determining one or more operating parameters for the apparatus to conduct a disinfection process in the room or area based on the data.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the one or more characteristics comprise number, size and/or distance of one or more objects in the room or area.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the one or more characteristics comprise size of the room or area.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , further comprising a reflector configured to redirect ultraviolet light emitted from the germicidal lamp to a region exterior to the apparatus and which is between approximately 2 feet and approximately 4 feet from a floor of the room or area, wherein the one or more parameters comprises a position for the reflector relative to the support structure.
