Claims (34)

1 . A surgical retractor, comprising:

an elongate portion configured to be grasped by a user's hand;

a curved portion extending distally from the elongate portion and defining a pocket;

a blade portion having a substantially concave shape along at least a part of the blade portion;

a distal end portion extending from the blade portion in a direction that is off-axis from the blade portion; and

a light source positioned to emit light distally towards the distal end portion.

2 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the part of the blade portion provides a viewing slot.

3 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the elongate portion comprises a substantially linear section having a first width and a base having a second width that is larger than the first width.

4 . The surgical retractor of claim 3 , wherein the curved portion is located at a first end of the elongate portion, and wherein the base is located at a second, opposite end of the elongate portion.

5 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the distal end portion comprises a plurality of elements configured to grip tissue during use of the surgical retractor.

6 . The surgical retractor of claim 5 , wherein a surface of the blade portion along the part of the blade faces a first direction, and wherein the plurality of elements extend in a second, opposite direction with respect to the blade portion.

7 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the part of the blade portion has a first width at least a portion of the elongate portion has a first width that is different from at least a portion of a second width of the blade portion.

8 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the blade portion is integral with the distal end portion.

9 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the blade portion is oriented at an angle of approximately 90 degrees with respect to the handle portion.

10 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the blade portion comprises a nonconductive plastic material.

11 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the surgical retractor is configured to be a single-use device.

12 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the surgical retractor is configured to perform a breast-related surgery.

13 . The surgical retractor of claim 1 , wherein the surgical retractor comprises an orthopedic retractor.

14 . A method of using a surgical retractor, the method comprising:

creating an incision in a patient; and

manipulating the surgical retractor to create a pocket along the incision, wherein the surgical retractor comprises:

an elongate portion configured to be grasped by a user's hand;

a curved portion extending distally from the elongate portion and defining a pocket;

a blade portion having a substantially concave shape along at least a part of the blade portion;

a distal end portion extending from the blade portion in a direction that is off-axis from the blade portion; and

a light source positioned to emit light distally towards the distal end portion.

15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising manipulating the surgical retractor to retract a tissue.

16 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the tissue comprises a breast tissue.

17 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising:

illuminating the pocket with the light source; and

performing a surgical procedure at the pocket while the pocket is illuminated by the light source.

18 . The method of claim 15 , wherein the surgical retractor comprises a single-use device, and wherein the method further comprises disposing of the surgical retractor after performing the surgical procedure.

19 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising viewing the pocket along the part of the blade portion.

20 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the blade portion is integral with the distal end portion.
