Abstract

Techniques and systems are provided for identifying a video segment displayed on a screen of a remote television system, and providing an option to switch to an alternative or related version of the video program that includes the video segment. For example, video segments displayed on a screen of a television system can be identified, and contextually-targeted content or contextually-related alternative content can be provided to a television system based on the identification of a video segment. The alternative or related version of the video program can include the currently displayed program in an on-demand format that can be viewed off-line and can be started over from a beginning portion of the program.

Claims (41)

2 . A system comprising:

one or more processors; and

a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium containing instructions which when executed on the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations including:

receiving pixel data associated with a video frame of a video segment being presented by a first computing device;

identifying the video segment being presented by the first computing device by comparing the pixel data with stored pixel data associated with known video segments;

determining, in response to identifying the video segment being presented, contextual content associated with the video segment;

receiving a communication associated with the contextual content; and

facilitating a presentation of the contextual content on a second computing device in response to receiving the communication associated with the contextual content.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the contextual content includes an alternative version of the video segment starting from a beginning of the video segment.

4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the contextual content includes a higher resolution version of the video segment.

5 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the video segment includes third party content, and wherein the contextual content includes alternative third party content configured to replace the third party content.

6 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the contextual content is configured to be presented by the second computing device while the video segment is being presented by the first computing device.

7 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the operations further include:

transmitting instructions to the first computing device, wherein the instructions cause the first computing device to present a user interface associated with the contextual content, and wherein the communication is generated in response to user interaction with the user interface.

The system of claim 2 , wherein facilitating the presentation of the contextual content includes facilitating a connection between the second computing device and a third party content server, wherein the third party content server is configured to provide third party content at a specified time interval of the video segment.

9 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

receiving pixel data associated with a video frame of a video segment being presented by a first computing device;

identifying the video segment being presented by the first computing device by comparing the pixel data with stored pixel data associated with known video segments;

determining, in response to identifying the video segment being presented, contextual content associated with the video segment;

receiving a communication associated with the contextual content; and

facilitating a presentation of the contextual content on a second computing device in response to receiving the communication associated with the contextual content.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein the contextual content includes an alternative version of the video segment starting from a beginning of the video segment.

11 . The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein the contextual content includes a higher resolution version of the video segment.

12 . The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein the video segment includes third party content, and wherein the contextual content includes alternative third party content configured to replace the third party content.

13 . The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein the contextual content is configured to be presented by the second computing device while the video segment is being presented by the first computing device.

14 . The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , further comprising:

transmitting instructions to the first computing device, wherein the instructions cause the first computing device to present a user interface associated with the contextual content, and wherein the communication is generated in response to user interaction with the user interface.

The computer-implemented method of claim 9 , wherein facilitating the presentation of the contextual content includes facilitating a connection between the second computing device and a third party content server, wherein the third party content server is configured to provide third party content at a specified time interval of the video segment.

16 . A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium containing instructions which when executed on one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations including:

receiving pixel data associated with a video frame of a video segment being presented by a first computing device;

identifying the video segment being presented by the first computing device by comparing the pixel data with stored pixel data associated with known video segments;

determining, in response to identifying the video segment being presented, contextual content associated with the video segment;

receiving a communication associated with the contextual content; and

facilitating a presentation of the contextual content on a second computing device in response to receiving the communication associated with the contextual content.

17 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the contextual content includes an alternative version of the video segment starting from a beginning of the video segment.

18 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the contextual content includes a higher resolution version of the video segment.

19 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the video segment includes third party content, and wherein the contextual content includes alternative third party content configured to replace the third party content.

20 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the contextual content is configured to be presented by the second computing device while the video segment is being presented by the first computing device.

21 . The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the operations further include:

transmitting instructions to the first computing device, wherein the instructions cause the first computing device to present a user interface associated with the contextual content, and wherein the communication is generated in response to user interaction with the user interface.
