Abstract

Systems and processes for cameras with a reconfigurable lens assembly are described. For example, some methods include automatically detecting that an accessory lens structure has been mounted to an image capture device including a mother lens and an image sensor configured to detect light incident through the mother lens, such that an accessory lens of the accessory lens structure is positioned covering the mother lens; responsive to detecting that the accessory lens structure has been mounted, automatically identifying the accessory lens from among a set of multiple supported accessory lenses; accessing an image captured using the image sensor when the accessory lens structure is positioned covering the mother lens; determining a warp mapping based on identification of the accessory lens; applying the warp mapping to the image to obtain a warped image; and transmitting, storing, or displaying an output image based on the warped image.

Claims (34)

1 . An optical accessory for an image capture device including a lens barrel supporting a first lens, the optical accessory comprising:

a second lens; and

a retaining mechanism directly connectable to the lens barrel in the image capture device such that the second lens covers the first lens, wherein the optical accessory is configured to transmit data to the image capture device when connected thereto.

2 . The optical accessory of claim 1 , wherein the optical accessory further includes:

a non-volatile memory.

3 . The optical accessory of claim 2 , wherein the non-volatile memory is configured to store more than two bits of data.

4 . The optical accessory of claim 2 , wherein the non-volatile memory is configured to store at least one of an identifier of the second lens, calibration data of the second lens, and optical parameters of the second lens.

5 . The optical accessory of claim 2 , wherein the optical accessory further includes:

a communications interface to transfer data from the non-volatile memory to the image capture device such that the image capture device receives data stored in the non-volatile memory as signals transmitted via the communications interface.

6 . The optical accessory of claim 5 , wherein the communication interface includes one or more first electrical conductors configured for contact with one or more second electrical conductors on the image capture device.

7 . The optical accessory of claim 5 , wherein the communications interface includes an identification tag configured to transmit signals to an identification reader in the image capture device.

8 . The optical accessory of claim 1 , wherein the optical accessory is configured for threaded connection to the image capture device.

9 . The optical accessory of claim 1 , wherein the second lens is configured to augment optical properties of the image capture device.

10 . The optical accessory of claim 1 , wherein the optical accessory is configured for automatic detection by the image capture device.

11 . An optical accessory for an image capture device including a first lens supported by an integrated lens barrel such that the first lens is located within a body of the image capture device when the optical accessory is connected to the image capture device,

wherein the optical accessory is configured for removable connection to the image capture device such that the image capture device is operable in a first configuration when the optical accessory is disconnected from the image capture device and in a second configuration when the optical accessory is connected to the image capture device to thereby augment optical properties of the image capture device, and

wherein the optical accessory is configured to transmit data to the image capture device in the second configuration.

12 . The optical accessory of claim 11 , wherein the optical accessory includes:

a second lens; and

a retaining mechanism configured for engagement with the image capture device such that the second lens covers the first lens in the second configuration.

13 . The optical accessory of claim 12 , further including:

a non-volatile memory.

14 . The optical accessory of claim 13 , wherein the non-volatile memory is configured to store more than two bits of data.

15 . The optical accessory of claim 13 , wherein optical accessory is configured to transmit data stored in the non-volatile memory to the image capture device in the second configuration.

16 . An optical accessory configured for removable connection to an image capture device including a first lens and a first electrical conductor, wherein the optical accessory is configured to augment optical properties of the image capture device and comprises:

a second lens configured to cover the first lens; and

a communications interface including a second electrical conductor configured for contact with the first electrical conductor to thereby transfer data identifying the optical accessory to the image capture device.

17 . The optical accessory of claim 16 , further including:

a retaining mechanism configured for threaded connection to a lens barrel of the image capture device supporting the first lens.

18 . The optical accessory of claim 17 , further including:

a sealing member positioned such that the sealing member is compressed between the retaining mechanism, the second lens, and the lens barrel upon connection of the optical accessory to the image capture device.

19 . The optical accessory of claim 16 , further including:

a non-volatile memory storing the data.

20 . The optical accessory of claim 19 , wherein the non-volatile memory is configured to store more than two bits of data including at least one of an identifier of the second lens, calibration data of the second lens, and optical parameters of the second lens.
