Abstract

An apparatus and method for removing support material from a part formed by three-dimensional (3D) printing. The support removal machine contains a tank for submersion of a 3D printed part into a liquid mass. The liquid mass circulates in the tank in a controlled manner such that submerged parts remain centrally suspended in the tank, regardless of the material, density and geometry comprising the part. The part circulates and rotates in conjunction with the rotational flow of the liquid mass for uniform exposure to means of support removal. During rotation, the part may be subjected to multiple means of agitation that include heat, chemical and ultrasonic, in order to optimize energy use and maximize efficiency of the removal of support material.

Claims (49)

1 . A method for removing support material from a 3D printed part comprising:

propelling a liquid from at least one nozzle in a part-containing tank;

generating a rotational flow in a liquid mass contained in the part-containing tank; and

suspending the 3D printed part in the rotational flow in the liquid mass contained in the part-containing tank,

wherein the support material from the 3D printed part is removed.

2 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

rotating the 3D printed part within the liquid mass.

3 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

monitoring a level of the liquid mass in the part-containing tank.

4 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

creating friction between the liquid mass and the 3D printed part in the part-containing tank.

5 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

causing vibration on a surface of the 3D printed part in the part-containing tank.

6 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

maintaining the 3D printed part in a central location in the part-containing tank.

7 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

containing the 3D printed part in a parts basket in the part-containing tank.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of suspending further comprises:

suspending the 3D printed part between a surface of the liquid mass and a bottom and sides of the part-containing tank.

9 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of suspending further comprises:

locating the 3D printed part centrally and submerged in the part-containing tank, circulating around a central axis of the part-containing tank.

10 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

flowing liquid from the part-containing tank to a second tank over a wall located between the part-containing tank and the second tank.

11 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

filtering the liquid mass to remove particulate matter during support material removal.

12 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

projecting ultrasound into the liquid mass in the part-containing tank.

13 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

causing cavitation in the liquid mass in the part-containing tank.

14 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

oxygenating the liquid mass.

15 . The method of claim 1 further comprising:

replenishing the liquid mass during removal of support material from the 3D printed part.

16 . The method of claim 1 wherein the step of propelling a liquid from at least one nozzle further comprises:

projecting liquid parallel to adjacent sides of the part-containing tank,

wherein the rotational flow comprises flow of liquid in three directions at generally 90 degree angles along three sides of the part-containing tank.

17 . A method for removing support material from 3D printed parts comprising:

pumping a liquid from an input tank into a part-containing tank;

generating a rotational flow in a liquid mass contained in the part-containing tank; and

suspending the 3D printed parts in the rotational flow in the liquid mass contained in the part-containing tank,

wherein the support material from the 3D printed parts is removed.

18 . A method for removing support material from a 3D printed part comprising:

creating a vortex in a liquid mass contained in a part-containing tank, wherein said step of creating a vortex comprises:

propelling a liquid from nozzle orifices in the part-containing tank; and

directing flow of the liquid along a side of the part-containing tank; and

suspending the 3D printed part in the vortex in the liquid mass contained in the part-containing tank,

wherein support material from the 3D printed part is removed.

19 . The method of claim 18 further comprising:

propelling the liquid along multiple sides of the part-containing tank.
