Abstract

A patient support apparatus includes a support surface including a topper. An opening is formed in a side of the support surface. A cavity extends from the opening into the support surface. An inlet port is positioned within the cavity and fluidly coupled to the topper. A pneumatic blower is configured to removably position within the cavity and has an outlet port that couples to the inlet port.

Claims (42)

1 - 10 . (canceled)

11 . A blower assembly for a patient support apparatus, comprising:

a blower housing having a base that forms a vacuum chamber and a top cover sealed to the base to create a pressurized chamber,

a blower having an inlet and an outlet, the inlet sealed to the vacuum chamber, the outlet in flow communication with the pressurized chamber, and

a pair of inlets in flow communication with the vacuum chamber.

12 . The blower assembly of claim 11 , wherein the blower housing is positioned in a foot end of the patient support apparatus.

13 . The blower assembly of claim 11 , wherein the blower housing is external to the patient support apparatus and includes a hose coupling the blower housing to a manifold of the patient support apparatus.

14 . The blower assembly of claim 11 , wherein each of pair of inlets comprises:

an intake extending into an inlet cavity,

a ridge formed at a bottom of the intake to prevent direct fluid intrusion into the cavity.

15 . The blower assembly of claim 14 , wherein the ridge covers a portion of the intake.

16 . The patient support apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the intake of the blower is sealed to the vacuum chamber.

17 . The blower assembly of claim 11 , further comprising an outlet formed in the top cover, the outlet releasing the air flow from the pressurized chamber to a manifold of the patient support apparatus.

18 . The blower assembly of claim 11 , wherein the blower increases speed to maintain pressure when an inlet of the blower housing is blocked.

19 . The blower assembly of claim 11 , wherein the blower decreases speed to maintain pressure when an outlet of the blower housing is blocked.

20 . A blower assembly for a patient support apparatus, comprising:

a blower housing having a base that forms a vacuum chamber and a cover sealed to the base to create a pressurized chamber,

a blower having a first opening and a second opening, the first opening coupled to the vacuum chamber, the second opening in flow communication with the pressurized chamber, and

a pair of inlets in flow communication with the vacuum chamber, wherein at least one of the pair of inlets includes an intake extending into an inlet cavity.

21 . The blower assembly of claim 20 , wherein the blower housing is positioned in a foot end of the patient support apparatus.

22 . The blower assembly of claim 20 , wherein the blower housing is external to the patient support apparatus.

23 . The blower assembly of claim 20 , wherein the blower housing includes a hose coupling the blower housing to a manifold of the patient support apparatus.

24 . The blower assembly of claim 20 , wherein the at least one of the pair of inlets includes a ridge formed at a bottom of the intake to prevent direct fluid intrusion into the cavity.

25 . The blower assembly of claim 24 , wherein the ridge covers a portion of the intake.

26 . The patient support apparatus of claim 24 , wherein the intake of the blower is sealed to the vacuum chamber.

27 . The blower assembly of claim 20 , further comprising an outlet formed in the top cover, the outlet releasing the air flow from the pressurized chamber to a manifold of the patient support apparatus.

28 . The blower assembly of claim 20 , wherein the blower increases speed to maintain pressure when an inlet of the blower housing is blocked.

29 . The blower assembly of claim 20 , wherein the blower decreases speed to maintain pressure when an outlet of the blower housing is blocked.

30 . The patient support apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

an x-ray cassette sleeve in the support surface,

a heel support mechanism built into a foot end of the support surface,

an electronics enclosure positioned within the support surface, wherein a wire extends from the electronics enclosure and is grounded, wherein an overmold is formed on the wire, wherein a terminal extends from the wire through the overmold to provide a ground test point,

a support surface outlet port extending through the support surface and in fluid communication with an outlet port of a blower assembly, the support surface outlet port having a lip to facilitate preventing the ingress of fluids into the support surface outlet port,

a flexible substrate positioned above the at least one support element,

a first conductive trace carried by the flexible substrate,

a second conductive trace carried by the flexible substrate adjacent to the first conductive trace, wherein an open circuit is formed between the first conductive trace and the second conductive trace when the flexible substrate is dry, wherein the presence of a threshold amount of liquid on the flexible substrate forms a closed circuit with the first conductive trace and the second conductive trace due to the flexible substrate being wet,

an end of life indicator to indicate when the support surface has reached an end of a useful life of the support surface, and

an interface on a side of the support surface, the interface including a dial to select a patient weight range, wherein a plurality of bladders within the support surface are inflated or deflated to adjust the support surface according to a patient weight range selected with the dial, wherein the interface includes the end of life indicator,

wherein the blower assembly includes:

a blower housing having a base that forms a vacuum chamber and a top cover sealed to the base to create a pressurized chamber,

a blower having an inlet and an outlet, the inlet sealed to the vacuum chamber, the outlet in flow communication with the pressurized chamber, and

a pair of inlets in flow communication with the vacuum chamber.
