Abstract

The problem of attaching a donor nerve stump to a recipient nerve for an end-to-side coaptation is solved by the use of a tissue connector. The tissue connector can have a body for receiving the donor nerve stump and one or more overflaps for attaching the tissue connector with the donor nerve stump therein to the epineurium on the side of the recipient nerve. Sutures can also be used to secure the tissue connector and nerves in place.

Claims (33)

1 . A method for connecting an end portion of a first tissue adjacent to a side of a second tissue, the method comprising:

inserting an end of the first tissue into an insertion end of a tissue connector device so that the end of the first tissue is received within a lumen of the tissue connector device, wherein the tissue connector device comprises:

a hollow body having the insertion end configured to receive at least an end portion of the first tissue, an adjoining end, and a lumen therebetween that extends through the hollow body, and

a single overflap extending from the adjoining end of the hollow body, wherein the single overflap is flexible and sized to at least partially extend around an exterior periphery of a non-end side of the second tissue and to position the non-end side of the second tissue adjacent to the adjoining end of the hollow body;

wrapping the single overflap around at least a portion of the exterior periphery of the non-end side of the second tissue to position the non-end side of the second tissue adjacent to the adjoining end of the hollow body;

securing the single overflap to the second tissue; and

securing the hollow body to the first tissue.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein inserting the end of the first tissue into the insertion end comprises inserting the first tissue into the lumen until a terminal end of the first tissue is at or near the adjoining end of the tissue connector device.

3 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first tissue is a first nerve and the second tissue is a second nerve.

4 . The method according to claim 3 , further comprising creating an epineurial window in the second nerve.

5 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first tissue is a donor nerve and the second tissue is a recipient nerve.

6 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein securing the single overflap to the second tissue comprises suturing the single overflap to the second tissue.

7 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein securing the hollow body to the first tissue comprises suturing the hollow body to the first tissue.

8 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein securing the hollow body to the first tissue comprises securing the insertion end to the first tissue.

9 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the single overflap extends longitudinally out from one half or less of a perimeter of an edge of the adjoining end of the hollow body, and wherein the method further comprises positioning the side of the second tissue along the perimeter of the edge of the adjoining end of the hollow body from which the single overflap does not extend prior to the wrapping step.

10 . The method according to claim 1 , further comprising positioning the second tissue at about where the single overflap begins at the adjoining end of the hollow body.

11 . A method for connecting an end portion of a first tissue adjacent to a side of a second tissue, the method comprising:

positioning a tissue connector device relative to the end portion of the first tissue and the side of the second tissue, wherein the tissue connector device comprises:

a hollow body having an insertion end, an adjoining end, and a lumen therebetween, and

a single overflap extending from the adjoining end of the hollow body,

inserting an end of the first tissue into the insertion end of the tissue connector device and into the lumen;

wrapping the single overflap around at least a portion of the second tissue to position the side of the second tissue adjacent to the adjoining end of the hollow body;

securing the single overflap to the second tissue; and

securing the hollow body to the first tissue.

12 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein inserting the end of the first tissue into the insertion end comprises inserting the first tissue into the lumen until a terminal end of the first tissue is at or near the adjoining end of the tissue connector device.

13 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein the first tissue is a first nerve and the second tissue is a second nerve.

14 . The method according to claim 13 , further comprising creating an epineurial window in the second nerve.

15 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein the first tissue is a donor nerve and the second tissue is a recipient nerve.

16 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein securing the single overflap to the second tissue comprises suturing the single overflap to the second tissue.

17 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein securing the hollow body to the first tissue comprises suturing the hollow body to the first tissue.

18 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein securing the hollow body to the first tissue comprises securing the insertion end to the first tissue.

19 . The method according to claim 11 , wherein the single overflap extends longitudinally out from one half or less of a perimeter of an edge of the adjoining end of the hollow body, and wherein the method further comprises positioning the side of the second tissue along the perimeter of the edge of the adjoining end of the hollow body from which the single overflap does not extend prior to the wrapping step.

20 . The method according to claim 11 , further comprising positioning the second tissue at about where the single overflap begins at the adjoining end of the hollow body.
