Abstract

Apparatuses (e.g., systems and devices) and methods for remotely accessing a local (e.g., home, office, etc.) network of devices connected to a local router.

Claims (42)

1 . A method of establishing a secure, encrypted, virtual private network (VPN), the method comprising:

requesting, by a mobile device operating as a virtual portal device, connectivity information for a home router;

receiving, by the mobile device, a short-term token from the home router, wherein the short-term token is received in response to a request transmitted by the mobile device to the home router;

transmitting, by the mobile device, a request to access the home router based at least in part on the short-term token;

receiving a long-term token from the home router, wherein the short-term token expires before the long-term token; and

establishing a VPN between the mobile device and the home router based at least in part on the long-term token.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the connectivity information is provided by a remote server separate from the mobile device and the home router.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the connectivity information for the home router includes a router internet protocol (IP) address and a transmission control protocol/user datagram protocol (TCP/UDP) port.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the short-term token expires within a time period of less than 24 hours.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the short-term token includes a first encryption key.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the long-term token includes a second encryption key, different from the first encryption key and the VPN is established based at least in part on the second encryption key.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein reception of the long-term token is based on a verification by the home router of the short-term token.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the long-term token is generated by the home router.

9 . A mobile device for establishing a secure, encrypted, virtual private network (VPN) to extend the network of a home router at a remote location, the mobile device comprising:

a wireless transceiver;

one or more processors; and;

a memory storing instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the mobile device to operate as a virtual portal device to:

request connectivity information for a home router;

receive a short-term token from the home router, wherein the short-term token is received in response to a request transmitted by the mobile device to the home router;

transmit a request to access the home router based at least in part on the short-term token;

receive a long-term token from the home router, wherein the short-term token expires before the long-term token; and

establish a VPN between the mobile device and the home router based at least in part on the long-term token.

10 . The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the connectivity information is provided by a remote server separate from the mobile device and the home router.

11 . The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the connectivity information for the home router includes a router internet protocol (IP) address and a transmission control protocol/user datagram protocol (TCP/UDP) port.

12 . The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the short-term token expires within a time period of less than 24 hours.

13 . The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the short-term token includes a first encryption key.

14 . The mobile device of claim 13 , wherein the long-term token includes a second encryption key, different from the first encryption key and the VPN is established based at least in part on the second encryption key.

15 . The mobile device of claim 13 , wherein reception of the long-term token is based on a verification by the home router of the short-term token.

16 . The mobile device of claim 9 , wherein the long-term token is generated by the home router.

17 . A method of establishing a secure, encrypted, virtual private network (VPN), the method comprising:

receiving, by a home router, a request for a short-term token from a mobile device, wherein the short-term token request is based at least in part on connectivity information associated with the home router provided to the mobile device;

transmitting the short-term token to the mobile device in response to receiving the request for the short-term token;

receiving a request to access the home router;

generating a long-term token, wherein the generation is based at least in part on verification of the request to access the home router;

transmitting the long-term token to the mobile device; and

establishing a VPN between the mobile device and the home router based at least in part on the long-term token.

18 . A method of establishing a secure, encrypted, virtual private network (VPN), the method comprising:

requesting, by a mobile device, connectivity information for a home router;

receiving, by the mobile device, a short-term token from the home router, wherein the short-term token is received in response to a request transmitted by the mobile device to the home router;

transmitting to a remote server, by the mobile device, a request to access the home router based at least in part on the short-term token;

receiving a long-term token from the remote server, wherein the short-term token expires before the long-term token; and

establishing a VPN between the mobile device and the home router based at least in part on the long-term token.
