Abstract

Orthopedic systems and methods are provided for use in preparing joints for implants. Specifically, hip preparation systems and methods are disclosed which can include a surgical orientation device. The hip preparation systems and methods can be used, for example, to orient the hip during the procedure, determine the orientation of an anatomical plane or planes, and orient a prosthetic component or components.

58 . A method for assisting a surgeon, comprising:

providing an orientation device comprising a display and at least one inertial sensor;

recording a first measurement when a selected location on a femur is contacted;

orienting a prosthetic cup; and

measuring a second measurement when the selected location on a femur is contacted.

59 . The method of claim 58 , further comprising comparing the first measurement and the second measurement to determine changes in leg length or joint offset.

60 . The method of claim 58 , wherein the orientation device communicates with another sensor.

61 . The method of claim 58 , wherein the selected location is on the greater trochanter.

62 . The method of claim 58 , further comprising assessing a pre-operative x-ray.

63 . The method of claim 58 , wherein recording the first measurement comprises recording a position in three-dimensional space relative to a reference frame.

64 . The method of claim 58 , further comprising determining an orientation of a plane.

65 . The method of claim 58 , further comprising inputting goals for adjusting leg length or joint offset.

66 . The method of claim 58 , further comprising positioning an additional sensor on the patient.

67 . A method for assisting a surgeon, comprising:

providing an orientation device comprising a display and at least one inertial sensor;

displaying instructions on the display to record a landmark;

displaying instructions on the display to position a prosthetic cup in an acetabulum;

displaying instructions on the display to assess the landmark after positioning the prosthetic cup; and

displaying on the display changes in leg length or joint offset.

68 . The method of claim 67 , further comprising requesting a user selection.

69 . The method of claim 67 , further comprising displaying instructions to assess a plane.

70 . The method of claim 67 , further comprising providing feedback to the user on the orientation of the prosthetic cup.

71 . The method of claim 67 , further comprising providing feedback to the user on impacting the prosthetic cup relative to a plane.

72 . A method for assisting a surgeon, comprising:

providing an orientation device comprising a display and at least one inertial sensor, wherein the orientation device records a first reference measurement before a prosthetic component is positioned;

positioning the prosthetic component, wherein the orientation device compares a second reference measurement after a prosthetic component is positioned with the first reference measurement; and

displaying a change in leg length or joint offset on the display of the orientation device.

73 . The method of claim 72 , further comprising analyzing pre-operative x-rays to determine what changes in joint offset and leg length are necessary to bring the hip into symmetry.

74 . The method of claim 72 , wherein the display comprises a touchscreen display.

75 . The method of claim 72 , wherein the user enters data or makes selections with the surgical orientation device.

76 . The method of claim 72 , further comprising aligning the orientation device with an axis of the leg.

72 . The method of claim 72 , further comprising eliminating errors in leg length and joint offset caused by movement of the femur.
