Abstract

A composition that can solvate biofilms and disrupt bacterial cell walls acts to both kill the bacteria by cell lysis and remove the biofilm. This solvent-containing composition is effective against a broad spectrum of microbes and can be used on a variety of surfaces, both living and inanimate. The polarity of the solvent component of the composition is lower than that of pure water so that the composition exhibits increased efficacy in solvating the macromolecular matrix of a biofilm and in penetrating bacterial cell walls.

Claims (19)

1 . A method for making a wound care solution, said method comprising

adding

(a1) up to 0.13% (w/w) benzalkonium chloride,

(a2) polyacid and

(a3) buffer precursor,

to a mixture of

(b1) from 5 to 10% (w/v) ethanol and

(b2) water, and

permitting (a1)-(a3) to dissolve in said mixture,

wherein (a2) and (a3) are provided in sufficient amounts so as to buffer the pH of said solution between 3.5 and 5.5 and wherein all percentages are based on the amount of said solution.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein said solution exhibits a pH of less than 4.6.

3 . The method of claim 1 wherein said polyacid comprises citric acid.

4 . The method of claim 3 wherein said polyacid is citric acid.

5 . The method of claim 1 wherein said buffer precursor is a citrate.

6 . The method of claim 5 wherein said citrate is trisodium citrate.

7 . The method of claim 1 wherein (a1)-(a3) are the only components added to said mixture.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein (b1) and (b2) are the only components of said mixture.

9 . A liquid wound care solution provided by the method of claim 1 .

10 . The liquid wound care solution of claim 9 consisting of (a) 5 to 10% (w/v) ethanol, (b) dissociation products of benzalkonium chloride, polyacid, and buffer precursor, and (c) water.
