Abstract

An orthopedic system for delivery of a therapeutic agent to a bone includes an elongate stem adapted to be inserted into an intramedullary canal, an inlet configured to receive the therapeutic agent, and one or more outlets configured to deliver the therapeutic agent to the bone. The elongate stem may comprise one or more protrusions to engage the bone, and one or more channels extending longitudinally therein, fluidly coupled to the inlet. The therapeutic agent flows from the inlet through the one or more channels and exits into the intramedullary canal through the one or more outlets. The system may be configured to allow one or more dimensions of the system to be adjusted to accommodate the anatomy of a patient.

Claims (20)

1 . A therapeutic fluid delivery system for treating a hip joint, said system comprising:

a femoral head configured to be disposed in an acetabulum, the femoral head comprising:

a central channel within an interior of the femoral head;

a partially spherical outer portion forming an external surface of the femoral head, the outer portion comprising a plurality of outlets extending through the outer portion; and

a cavity internal to the outer portion that is in fluid communication with said central channel and with said plurality of outlets through the outer portion such that fluid that flows into the central channel passes through said cavity and to and through said plurality of outlets; and

a femoral stem comprising an inlet, said femoral stem configured to be coupled to the femoral head so as to be in fluid communication with the central channel, the femoral stem configured to be disposed in a femoral medullary canal,

wherein, when the system receives a fluid when the system is implanted, the fluid is deliverable from the plurality of outlets into the acetabulum.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the central channel further comprises a first threaded portion, wherein said femoral stem comprises a second threaded portion, and wherein said femoral stem is configured to be adjustably coupled to said femoral head by engaging said first and second threaded portions.

3 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a locking mechanism for locking the femoral head with the femoral stem.

4 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising one or more set screws for releasably locking the femoral head to the femoral stem.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said femoral head further comprises at least one receiving region for accepting a set screw to lock the femoral head relative to the femoral stem.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the femoral stem comprises a plurality of protrusions extending axially along a longitudinal axis of the femoral stem, said protrusions adapted to contact an inner surface of said femoral medullary canal.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the femoral stem comprises a stem channel extending through said femoral stem, and further wherein the stem channel is in fluid communication with said inlet and said central channel of said femoral head when said femoral stem is coupled to said femoral head.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the femoral stem is tapered.

9 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising an acetabular cup adapted to be placed between the femoral head and the acetabulum, and wherein when the system is implanted and when fluid is delivered through said plurality of outlets of said femoral head, said fluid is delivered to said acetabular cup and said acetabulum.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of outlets comprise a plurality of holes having varying diameters.

11 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising a plurality of outlets in the femoral stem that are in fluid communication with said inlet.

12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein said cavity is partially spherically shaped.

13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises at least one of saline, an irrigation fluid, and an antibiotic.

14 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the fluid comprises at least one of vancomycin, tobramycin, or a combination thereof.
