Automated Docking Of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle
Described herein are systems for automated docking of an unmanned aerial vehicle. For example, some systems include a landing surface configured to hold an unmanned aerial vehicle; a box configured to enclose the landing surface in a first arrangement of the dock and expose the landing surface in a second arrangement of the dock; and a retractable arm, wherein the landing surface is positioned at an end of the retractable arm and the retractable arm is configured to extend to move the landing surface outside of the box and contract to pull the landing surface inside of the box.
1 - 20 . (canceled)
21 . A method of docking an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the method comprising:
controlling a propulsion mechanism of the UAV to cause the UAV to approach a dock;
adjusting a landing surface of the dock to facilitate landing of the UAV;
analyzing a first fiducial located on the landing surface based on one or more images captured by the UAV; and
controlling the propulsion mechanism to cause the UAV to land on the landing surface based on analysis of the first fiducial.
22 . The method of claim 21 , further comprising:
analyzing a second fiducial on the dock based on the one or more images.
23 . The method of claim 22 , wherein analyzing the second fiducial includes analyzing an outer surface of a box of the dock.
24 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising:
reconfiguring the box between a first arrangement in which the box encloses the landing surface and a second arrangement in which the landing surface is exposed.
25 . The method of claim 23 , further comprising:
controlling the propulsion mechanism to cause the UAV to fly to a first location in a vicinity of the landing surface based on analysis of the first fiducial, wherein the second fiducial is larger than the first fiducial.
26 . The method of claim 25 , further comprising:
controlling the propulsion mechanism to cause the UAV to fly to a second location above the landing surface; and
controlling the propulsion mechanism to cause the UAV to descend towards the first fiducial.
27 . The method of claim 26 , further comprising:
controlling the propulsion mechanism to cause the UAV to hover above the landing surface.
28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein causing the UAV to hover above the landing surface includes causing the UAV to hover at a predetermined height above the landing surface.
29 . The method of claim 27 , further comprising:
hovering the UAV until stability conditions are met.
30 . The method of claim 29 , further comprising:
controlling the propulsion mechanism to cause the UAV to perform a final approach to touch down on the landing surface upon meeting the stability conditions.
31 . A method of docking an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the method comprising:
determining a pose of a first fiducial located on an outer surface of a dock;
causing the UAV to fly to a first position in a vicinity of a landing surface of the dock based on the pose of the first fiducial;
determining a pose of a second fiducial located on the landing surface;
causing the UAV to land on the landing surface based on the pose of the second fiducial; and
automatically charging the UAV while the UAV is on the landing surface.
32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein automatically charging the UAV includes causing electrical contact between the UAV and conducting contacts on the landing surface.
33 . The method of claim 31 , further comprising:
adjusting the landing surface.
34 . The method of claim 33 , wherein adjusting the landing surface includes adjusting the landing surface along an axis extending in generally orthogonal relation to a landing direction of the UAV.
35 . The method of claim 31 , further comprising:
hovering the UAV above the landing surface until error estimates are met.
36 . A method of docking an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with a dock, the method comprising:
hovering a UAV above a landing surface of the dock until stability conditions are met; and
causing the UAV to land on the landing surface upon meeting the stability conditions.
37 . The method of claim 36 , wherein hovering the UAV above the landing surface includes hovering the UAV at a predetermined height above the landing surface.
38 . The method of claim 36 , further comprising:
analyzing a first fiducial located on an outer surface of the dock during an initial approach; and
analyzing a second fiducial located on the landing surface prior to hovering the UAV above the landing surface.
39 . The method of claim 36 , further comprising:
opening a door of the dock; and
adjusting the landing surface.
40 . The method of claim 39 , wherein adjusting the landing surface includes adjusting the landing surface along an axis extending in non-parallel relation to a landing direction of the UAV.
