Abstract

A network system provides delivery of items using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones. The network system uses an infrastructure of nodes that include landing pads to dock drones, as well as interfaces to provide and receive items from docked drones. Nodes may be stationary (e.g., fixed at a building rooftop or public transit station) or mobile (e.g., mounted to a vehicle). The network system may determine a route for delivery of an item, where a drone transports the item for at least a portion of the route. For example, the route may include multiple waypoints associated with nodes between which drones travel. For other portions of the route, the network system may request a provider to transport the item using a ground-based vehicle.

Claims (39)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . A computer-implemented method for item delivery, comprising:

accessing, using one or more processors, data indicative of a destination location for an item for delivery;

accessing, using one or more processors, data corresponding to a first node located within a first threshold distance from an initial location of the item for delivery;

accessing, using one or more processors, data corresponding to a second node located within a second threshold distance from the first waypoint based on a range of travel of an aerial vehicle;

computing, using the one or more processors, navigation information for the aerial vehicle from the first node to a second node;

computing, using the one or more processors, an estimated time at which the item will be available at the second node;

computing, using the one or more processors, a route for a second vehicle to deliver the item to the destination location; and

transmitting the route and the estimated time at which the item will be available at the second node to a client device for an operator of the second vehicle.

22 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein the first node is mobile and mounted on a vehicle.

23 . The computer-implemented method of claim 22 , further comprising computing, using the one or more processors, navigation information for the aerial vehicle to the first node to pick up the item for delivery at the first node.

24 . The computer-implemented method of claim 22 , further comprising computing, using the one or more processors, a route for the vehicle with the first node to pick up the item at the initial location of the item for delivery.

25 . The computer-implemented method of claim 22 , further comprising computing, using the one or more processors, an estimated time at which the vehicle with the first node will pick up the item for delivery,

wherein computing the navigation information for the aerial vehicle from the first node to the second node comprises computing the navigation information for the aerial vehicle such that the aerial vehicle is located at the first node at the estimated time at which the vehicle with the first node will pick up the item for delivery.

26 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein the second node is mounted on the second vehicle.

27 . The computer-implemented method of claim 26 , wherein computing the route for the second vehicle to deliver the item to the destination location comprises computing the route for the second vehicle to deliver the item from the second node to the destination location.

28 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein one or both of the first node and the second node is stationary and comprises one or more landing pads for the aerial vehicle.

29 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , further comprising transmitting, using one or more processors, instructions for the aerial vehicle to autonomously implement the navigation information and fly from the first node to the second node.

30 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein a range of travel of the aerial vehicle is no less than ten miles.

31 . A system for data transmission between aircraft, comprising:

one or more processors; and

one or more non-transitory computer-readable media that store instructions that are executable by the one or more processors to perform operations, the operations comprising

accessing data indicative of a destination location for an item for delivery;

accessing data corresponding to a first node located within a first threshold distance from an initial location of the item for delivery,

accessing data corresponding to a second node located within a second threshold distance from the first waypoint based on a range of travel of an aerial vehicle,

computing navigation information for the aerial vehicle from the first node to a second node,

computing an estimated time at which the item will be available at the second node,

computing a route for a second vehicle to deliver the item to the destination location, and

transmitting the route and the estimated time at which the item will be available at the second node to a client device for an operator of the second vehicle.

32 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the first node is mobile and mounted on a vehicle.

33 . The system of claim 32 , wherein the operations further comprise computing navigation information for the aerial vehicle to the first node to pick up the item for delivery at the first node.

34 . The system of claim 32 , wherein the operations further comprise computing a route for the vehicle with the first node to pick up the item at the initial location of the item for delivery.

35 . The system of claim 32 , wherein the operations further comprise computing an estimated time at which the vehicle with the first node will pick up the item for delivery,

wherein computing the navigation information for the aerial vehicle from the first node to the second node comprises computing the navigation information for the aerial vehicle such that the aerial vehicle is located at the first node at the estimated time at which the vehicle with the first node will pick up the item for delivery.

36 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the second node is mounted on the second vehicle.

37 . The system of claim 36 , wherein computing the route for the second vehicle to deliver the item to the destination location comprises computing the route for the second vehicle to deliver the item from the second node to the destination location.

38 . The system of claim 31 , wherein one or both of the first node and the second node is stationary and comprises one or more landing pads for the aerial vehicle.

39 . The system of claim 31 , wherein the operations further comprise transmitting instructions for the aerial vehicle to autonomously implement the navigation information and fly from the first node to the second node.

40 . The system of claim 31 , wherein a range of travel of the aerial vehicle is no less than ten miles.
