Abstract

A finger-worn wearable ring device may include a ring-shaped housing, a printed circuit board, and a sensor module that includes one or more light-emitting components and one or more light-receiving components. The wearable ring device may further include a communication module configured to wirelessly communicate with an application executable on a user device.

Claims (50)

2 . A wearable ring device configured to be worn on a finger of a user, the wearable ring device comprising:

a housing having an interior diameter between 12 mm and 24 mm and an exterior diameter between 18 mm and 30 mm, the housing comprising an exterior surface of the wearable ring device and an interior surface of the wearable ring device, the interior surface configured to at least partially contact the user when the wearable ring device is worn by the user;

a curved battery disposed at least partially within the housing, wherein the curved battery comprises a size and shape configured to fit within a curved portion of the housing;

one or more sensors electrically coupled with the curved battery, the one or more sensors configured to support monitoring at least one of physical activity, sleep, or health of the user; and

one or more photovoltaic cells electrically coupled with the curved battery, wherein the wearable ring device is configured to generate a current used to recharge the curved battery based, at least in part, on light received by the one or more photovoltaic cells through or incident on the housing.

3 . The wearable ring device of claim 2 , wherein the housing has a thickness between 1.5 mm and 3 mm.

4 . The wearable ring device of claim 3 , wherein the housing has a width between 3 mm and 8 mm.

5 . The wearable ring device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more photovoltaic cells are positioned within or beneath the exterior surface of the wearable ring device and are configured to receive the light through or incident on the exterior surface of the wearable ring device.

6 . The wearable ring device of claim 2 , further comprising:

one or more optical elements that are configured to focus, concentrate, or magnify the light through or incident on the housing to the one or more photovoltaic cells.

7 . The wearable ring device of claim 6 , wherein the one or more optical elements are configured to collect the light across a field that is larger than the one or more photovoltaic cells.

8 . The wearable ring device of claim 6 , further comprising:

an attachment frame extending from the exterior surface of the housing, wherein the attachment frame is configured to secure the one or more optical elements to the wearable ring device and maintain the one or more optical elements in a fixed position relative to the one or more photovoltaic cells.

9 . The wearable ring device of claim 2 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise:

an accelerometer, a gyroscope, or both, configured to detect physical movement of the user;

a temperature sensor configured to detect skin temperature of the user;

one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) configured to emit visible light and one of infrared light or near-infrared light through the interior surface of the wearable ring device; and

one or more light sensors configured to detect one or more of the visible light, the infrared light, or the near-infrared light as received through the interior surface of the wearable ring device to support measurement of a heart rate and a blood oxygenation level of the user.

10 . The wearable ring device of claim 2 further comprising:

one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs); and

one or more processors that are individually or collectively configured to cause the wearable ring device to adjust one or more operational parameters associated with the one or more LEDs based at least in part on the light received by the one or more photovoltaic cells.

11 . The wearable ring device of claim 2 , wherein:

the housing comprises an external housing and an internal housing,

the external housing comprises metallic material and has an internal surface, a first flange, and a second flange, wherein the internal surface, the first flange, and the second flange define an internal space of the external housing, and

the internal housing comprises an internal potting that at least partially fills the internal space of the external housing, wherein at least a portion of the internal potting comprises the interior surface of the wearable ring device, and wherein the external housing and the internal potting together enclose the curved battery, a printed circuit board, and the one or more sensors within the housing.

12 . A method performed at a wearable ring device configured to be worn on a finger of a user, the method comprising:

receiving light by one or more photovoltaic cells of the wearable ring device, the one or more photovoltaic cells disposed within or beneath an exterior surface of a housing of the wearable ring device, the housing further comprising an interior surface of the wearable ring device that is configured to at least partially contact the user when the wearable ring device is worn by the user;

generating a current based at least in part on the light received by the one or more photovoltaic cells;

recharging a curved battery of the wearable ring device based at least in part on the current, wherein the curved battery has a size and shape configured to fit within a curved portion of the housing, and wherein the curved battery is electrically coupled with one or more sensors of the wearable ring device; and

collecting, using the one or more sensors after recharging the curved battery, data associated with at least one of physical activity, sleep, or health of the user.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the housing has an interior diameter between 12 mm and 24 mm, an exterior diameter between 18 mm and 30 mm, and has a thickness between 1.5 mm and 3 mm.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the housing has a width between 3 mm and 8 mm.

15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more photovoltaic cells are configured to receive the light through or incident on the exterior surface of the wearable ring device.

16 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

receiving the light via one or more optical elements; and

focusing, concentrating, or magnifying the light by the one or more optical elements, wherein generating the current is based at least in part on the one or more photovoltaic cells receiving the light as focused, concentrated, or magnified by the one or more optical elements.

17 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the one or more optical elements are configured to collect the light across a field that is larger than the one or more photovoltaic cells.

18 . The method of claim 16 , wherein the wearable ring device comprises an attachment frame extending from the exterior surface of the housing, wherein the attachment frame is configured to secure the one or more optical elements to the wearable ring device and maintain the one or more optical elements in a fixed position relative to the one or more photovoltaic cells.

19 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the one or more sensors comprise:

an accelerometer, a gyroscope, or both, configured to detect physical movement of the user;

a temperature sensor configured to detect skin temperature of the user;

one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) configured to emit visible light and one of infrared light or near-infrared light through the interior surface of the wearable ring device; and

one or more light sensors configured to detect one or more of the visible light, the infrared light, or the near-infrared light as received through the interior surface of the wearable ring device to support measurement of a heart rate and a blood oxygenation level of the user.

20 . The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

adjusting one or more operational parameters associated with one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs) based at least in part on the light received by the one or more photovoltaic cells, wherein collecting the data associated with the user is based at least in part on adjusting the one or more operational parameters.

21 . The method of claim 12 , wherein:

the housing comprises an external housing and an internal housing,

the external housing comprises metallic material and has an internal surface, a first flange, and a second flange, wherein the internal surface, the first flange, and the second flange at least partially define an internal space of the external housing, and

the internal housing comprises an internal potting that at least partially fills the internal space of the external housing, wherein at least a portion of the internal potting comprises the interior surface of the wearable ring device, and wherein the external housing and the internal potting together enclose the curved battery, a printed circuit board, and the one or more sensors within the housing.
