CANNULA ASSEMBLY
A cannula can include a funnel portion and a tubular portion. The funnel portion can include a sidewall. The tubular portion extends distally from the funnel portion. The sidewall includes one or more voids that permit access to a seal cartridge through the sidewall.
1 . A cannula comprising:
a funnel portion having a sidewall;
a tubular portion extending distally from the funnel portion; and
one or more voids in the sidewall of the funnel portion that permit access to a seal cartridge through the sidewall.
2 . The cannula of claim 1 , wherein the one or more voids include a void that permits access to a fluid port of the seal cartridge through the sidewall.
3 . The cannula of claim 1 , wherein the one or more voids include a void that permits access to a latch release of the seal cartridge through the sidewall.
4 . The cannula of claim 1 , wherein the one or more voids include a slot that extends through a proximal end of the sidewall.
5 . The cannula of any of claim 1 , wherein the one or more voids include a hole circumscribed by the sidewall.
6 . The cannula of any of claim 1 , wherein the one or more voids include a void having a notch that guides rotational alignment of the seal cartridge with respect to the cannula funnel portion about a longitudinal axis of the cannula.

11 . The cannula of claim 1 , wherein the funnel portion comprises a stop that blocks distal motion of the seal cartridge.
12 . The cannula of any of claim 1 , wherein the funnel portion comprises catch that engages a latch of the seal cartridge.
13 . The cannula of any of claim 1 , wherein, when the funnel portion is engaged with the seal cartridge, a proximal end of the seal cartridge does not extend proximally beyond a proximal end of the funnel portion.
14 . A cannula comprising:
a funnel portion having a sidewall and a circumferential rim;
a tubular portion extending distally from the funnel portion; and
a cartridge slot formed in the funnel portion, the cartridge slot comprising a discontinuity in the rim of the funnel portion that opens to a void in the sidewall of the funnel portion to permit access to a fluid port of a seal cartridge through the sidewall.
15 . The cannula of claim 14 , wherein the cartridge slot extends longitudinally from the rim, adjacent to one or more voids that permit access through the sidewall to a latch release of the seal cartridge.
16 . The cannula of claim 15 , wherein the one or more voids include a void having a notch that guides rotational alignment of the seal cartridge with respect to the cannula funnel portion.

21 . The cannula of claim 15 , wherein the funnel portion comprises a stop that blocks distal motion of the seal cartridge.
22 . The cannula of claim 15 , wherein the funnel portion comprises catch that engages a latch of the seal cartridge.
23 . The cannula of claim 15 , wherein, when the funnel portion is engaged with the seal cartridge, a proximal end of the seal cartridge does not extend proximally beyond a proximal end of the funnel portion.
24 . A method of assembling a trocar assembly, the method comprising:
inserting a fluid port of a seal cartridge through a void of a funnel portion of a cannula, the cannula funnel portion having a sidewall and the cannula having a tubular portion extending distally from the funnel portion, the void of the cannula funnel portion extending through the sidewall of the funnel portion; and
coupling the seal cartridge to the cannula within the cannula funnel portion.
25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the inserting comprises tilting a longitudinal axis of the seal cartridge relative to a longitudinal axis of the cannula to pass the fluid port through the void.

The method of claim 24 , wherein the cannula funnel portion comprises a circumferential rim and a cartridge slot formed in the funnel portion as a discontinuity in the rim of the funnel portion, the cartridge slot opening to the void in the sidewall of the funnel portion to permit insertion of the fluid port into the void, and wherein the inserting comprises aligning a longitudinal axis of the seal cartridge with a longitudinal axis of the cannula while inserting the fluid port into the void.
28 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the coupling comprising rotational aligning the seal cartridge with respect to the cannula funnel portion.
29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein cannula funnel portion comprises a notch for guiding the rotational alignment of the seal cartridge.
