Abstract

The present disclosure provides medical devices having MRI-compatible circuitry. Preferably, the devices do not project an enlarged profile, yet their position can be determined during an iMRI procedure. Illustrative embodiments of such a device can include a base surface, a first conducting layer disposed on the base surface, a first insulating layer disposed over at least a portion of the first conducting layer, and a second conducting layer disposed over at least a portion of the first insulating layer.

Claims (19)

1 . A method of forming a medical device having MRI-compatible circuitry, comprising:

providing a base surface; and

printing a first conducting layer on the base surface using an ink containing electrically conductive material to form circuitry that is MRI-compatible.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising forming a first insulating layer over at least a portion of the first conducting layer; and printing a second conducting layer over at least a portion of the first insulating layer.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first conducting layer and second conducting layer is formed from discrete lengths of differing types of printed electrically conductive material.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the first conducting layer and second conducting layer are formed from alternating lengths of electrically conductive material that have different impedances.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device is an interventional MRI (“iMRI”) medical device, and further wherein at least one of the first conducting layer and the second conducting layer are selectively formed to each have an impedance that substantially matches anatomy along which the medical device is to be positioned.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the first conducting layer forms at least a portion of a first transmission line, and further wherein the second conducting layer forms at least a portion of a second transmission line.

7 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the alternating lengths of electrically conductive material each have a length that is less than about one quarter of a wavelength of an applied RF signal corresponding to the Larmor frequency of a nuclei of interest in a background magnetic field Bo of a MR scanner.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the portion of the surface of the base surface upon which the first conductive layer is formed is an insulating material.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising depositing a layer of insulating material over at least a portion of the surface of the base surface prior to printing the first conductive layer.

10 . The method of any preceding claim , further comprising printing at least one conductive winding on the medical device and electrically coupling the at least one conductive winding to at least one of the first conductive layer and the second conductive layer.

11 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first conductive layer is electrically coupled to the second conductive layer at a location where the first insulating layer is not present.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the base surface includes an insulating sleeve configured to be fitted over at least a portion of a further device, and wherein the method further comprises disposing the insulating sleeve over the further device.

13 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first conductive layer and second conductive layer are printed onto the medical device using different materials.

14 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the first conductive layer and second conductive layer are printed onto the medical device into configurations having different geometries.

15 . The method claim 1 , wherein the first insulating layer is printed onto the medical device.

16 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the medical device is selected from the group consisting of an implant, a shunt, a stent, a surgical mesh, a neuromodulation device, a spinal implant, a patch, and a pacemaker lead.

17 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the iMRI device is selected from the group consisting of a needle, a catheter, a delivery catheter, a guidewire, an endoscope, and a flexible device.
