Abstract

A fluid flow sensor assembly for detecting material deposits in a fluid flow conduit includes a body and an array of pairs of temperature sensors disposed within the body, where each pair of temperature sensors is spaced a distance apart along a primary flow direction of the fluid flow conduit.

Claims (37)

1 . A fluid flow sensor assembly for detecting material deposits in a fluid flow conduit, the fluid flow sensor assembly comprising:

a housing;

a body encased by the housing;

an array of pairs of temperature sensors disposed within the body, the array of pairs of temperature sensors arranged in multiple rows and columns, each pair of temperature sensors spaced a distance apart along a primary flow direction of the fluid flow conduit; and

a mounting device adapted to removably secure the housing, the body, and the array of pairs of temperature sensors to the fluid flow conduit.

2 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a heater secured to an exterior portion of the body, the heater being encased by the housing.

3 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 2 , further comprising a temperature sensor operatively engaged with the heater.

4 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising insulation material surrounding the array of pairs of temperature sensors.

5 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 2 , wherein the heater defines a geometry matching a geometry of the exterior portion of the body.

6 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the body defines an interior portion with a geometric profile matching an exterior geometry of the fluid flow conduit.

7 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the body is a material selected from the group consisting of Aluminum Nitride (AIN) and Boron Nitride.

8 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the temperature sensors are selected from the group consisting of thermocouples, RTDs, thermistors, and an integrated circuit temperature transducer.

9 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the body defines a plurality of interior apertures, and a temperature sensor of each of the pairs of temperature sensors is disposed within an interior aperture of the plurality of interior apertures.

10 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 9 , wherein the plurality of interior apertures extend longitudinally, along the primary flow direction.

11 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a heat sink secured to an exterior portion of the body.

12 . A system for detecting material deposits in a fluid flow conduit, the system comprising:

the fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 1 ;

a computing device configured to determine temperatures from the array of pairs of temperature sensors, monitor differences in thermal response of the array of pairs of temperature sensors over time, and determine a presence of material deposits based on the differences in thermal response; and

a clog indication means.

13 . The system according to claim 12 , further comprising:

a heater disposed proximate the array of pairs of temperature sensors; and

a controller in communication with the heater,

wherein the controller activates the heater to generate auxiliary heat for active detection of the material deposits.

14 . The system according to claim 12 , wherein the computing device is configured to provide pulsed power to the array of pairs of temperature sensors, thereby generating heat for active detection of the material deposits.

15 . A fluid flow sensor assembly for detecting material deposits in a fluid flow conduit, the fluid flow sensor assembly comprising:

a housing;

a body encased by the housing;

an array of pairs of temperature sensors disposed within the body, the array of pairs of temperature sensors are arranged in multiple rows and columns, each pair of temperature sensors spaced a distance apart along a primary flow direction of the fluid flow conduit;

a heater secured to an exterior portion of the body, the heater being encased by the housing; and

a mounting device adapted to secure the housing to the conduit.

16 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 15 , further comprising a temperature sensor operatively engaged with the heater.

17 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 15 , wherein the mounting device comprises:

an interconnecting member radially opposed to the housing, the interconnecting member having an upper surface that corresponds to a shape of the fluid flow conduit;

biasing members disposed within the interconnecting member.

18 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 15 , wherein the body defines a plurality of interior apertures, and a temperature sensor of each of the pairs of temperature sensors is disposed within an interior aperture of the plurality of interior apertures.

19 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 18 , wherein the plurality of interior apertures extend longitudinally, along the primary flow direction.

20 . The fluid flow sensor assembly according to claim 15 , further comprising an insulation member disposed over the heater.
