Abstract

A resection guide locator includes a bone engagement portion with surfaces that are complementary to the surface topographies of a bone to be resected during surgery. A housing includes a socket defined by a resilient annular wall that is sized and arranged so to accept a resection guide by press-fit to thereby position and hold the resection guide within the socket. The resection guide is maintained in a predetermined, preferred position while the surfaces are releasably locked in position on the bone. A method is disclosed for forming and using the resection guide locator.

Claims (23)

1 . A method, comprising:

securing a first side of a locating device in contact with a first bone, the locating device having a body including a pair of wings that outwardly extend from the body, the body includes a first side and a second side, the first side including a surface that is complementary to an anatomical surface of the first bone, the body defining a plurality of slots each of which extends through the body, the body having a surface that is recessed relative to a surface of the second side such that the recessed surface of the body is disposed between the complementary surface and the surface of the second side, wherein the recessed surface is suitable for receiving a cutting guide such that the plurality of slots are defined through the recessed surface;

inserting a pin through a bore defined in the locating device so as to engage the first bone such that a first slot of the plurality of slots extends in a first direction, a second slot of the plurality of slots extends in a second direction, and a third slot of the plurality of slots extends in a third direction;

moving a cutting guide into position according to a placement of the locating device; inserting a cutting tool into a slot of the plurality of slots; and

resecting the first bone.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of slots includes a fourth slot extending in the first direction, a fifth slot extending in the second direction, and a sixth slot extending in the third direction.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein moving the cutting guide into position includes placing the cutting guide into the recessed surface defined by the second side of the locating device such that the fourth slot aligns with the first slot, the fifth slot aligns with the second slot, and the sixth slot aligns with the third slot.

4 . The method of claim 1 , comprising removing the pin prior to resecting the first bone.

5 . A method for forming a locating device comprising:

(A) generating an image of a bone surface;

(B) converting the image to a digital model;

(C) adding a digital representation of the locating device to the digital model so as to form a composite digital model;

(D) mapping the image of the bone surface complementarily onto a bone engagement portion of the locating device; and

(E) manufacturing the locating device based upon the composite digital model so that a manufactured locating device is formed including the complementary surface on a bone engagement portion with a receptacle pocket sized to receive a resection guide with a press-fit, the locating device defining an elongate slot and a pair of through holes within the receptacle pocket, the elongate slot and pair of through holes being positioned within the receptacle pocket such that they respectively align with an elongate slot and a pair of through holes defined by the resection guide when the resection guide is received within the receptacle pocket, wherein the elongate slot and the pair of through holes defined within the receptacle pocket are disposed at a distance from one another such that they do not intersect.

6 . A method comprising:

(A) generating an image of a bone surface;

(B) converting the image to a digital model;

(C) adding a digital representation of a locating device to the digital model so as to form a composite digital model;

(D) mapping the image of the bone surface complementarily onto a bone engagement portion of the locating device;

(E) manufacturing the locating device based upon the composite digital model so that a manufactured locating device is formed including the complementary surface on a bone engagement portion and a receptacle pocket sized to receive a resection guide with a press-fit, the resection guide locator defining an elongate slot and a pair of through holes within the receptacle pocket, the elongate slot and pair of through holes being positioned within the receptacle pocket such that they respectively align with an elongate slot and a pair of through holes defined by the resection guide when the resection guide is received within the receptacle pocket; and

(F) applying the locating device to the bone such that the complementary surface securely engages the bone engagement portion to a corresponding portion of the bone surface, wherein the elongate slot and the pair of through holes defined within the receptacle pocket are disposed at a distance from one another such that they do not intersect.

7 . The method of claim 6 further comprising inserting a resection guide in the receptacle pocket of the locating device such that the elongate slot and the pair of through holes defined by the resection guide respectively align with the elongate slot and pair of through holes defined by the locating device within the receptacle pocket.

8 . The method of claim 7 further comprising pinning the resection guide to the bone surface by inserting a pin into each through hole of the pair of through holes define by the resection guide such that the locating device is sandwiched between the resection guide and the bone surface.
