Abstract

Hydrocarbon swelling particles for wellbore cementing include a crosslinked polymer comprising vinyl aromatic monomer and/or (meth)acrylic monomer.

Claims (25)

1 . A composition for use in wellbores comprising:

hydrocarbon swelling particles;

wherein the particles comprise a crosslinked polymer that comprises vinyl aromatic monomer and a (meth)acrylic monomer.

2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the vinyl aromatic monomer comprises at least one styrene monomer selected from the group consisting of para-methylstyrene and para-tert-butylstyrene.

3 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the (meth)acrylic monomer comprises at least one acrylate or methacrylate selected from the group consisting of isobutyl methacrylate, tert-butyl-methacrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate

4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the (meth)acrylic monomer comprises isobutyl methacrylate.

5 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the particles have diameters within the range of from about 20 μm to about 1,000 μm.

6 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the particles have a D50 in the range of from about 50 μm to about 300 μm.

7 . The composition of claim 1 , further comprising:

a dispersant.

8 . The composition of claim 7 , wherein the dispersant is a polycarboxylate dispersant.

9 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the vinyl aromatic monomer is included in an amount of from about 20 mol % to about 80 mol % of the polymer.

10 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the crosslinked polymer further comprises a glass transition temperature adjusting monomer.

11 . The composition of claim 10 , wherein the glass transition temperature adjusting monomer is included in an amount of from about 5 mol % to about 30 mol % of the polymer.

12 . The composition of claim 10 , wherein the glass transition temperature adjusting monomer is selected from the group consisting of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, butyl acrylate, butadiene, and a combination of any two or more thereof.

13 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the polymer has a glass transition temperature in the range of from about 40° C. to about 80° C.

14 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the (meth)acrylic monomer comprises a methacrylate monomer comprising a plurality of methyl end groups.

15 . A wellbore cementing composition comprising:

cement powder; and

hydrocarbon swelling particles comprising a crosslinked polymer comprising a vinyl aromatic monomer and a (meth)acrylic monomer.

16 . The composition of claim 15 , wherein the hydrocarbon swelling particles are present in an amount of from about 0.5 to about 4.0% BWOC.

17 . The composition of claim 15 , wherein the vinyl aromatic monomer comprises at least one styrene monomer selected from the group consisting of para-methylstyrene and para-tert-butylstyrene.

18 . The composition of claim 15 , wherein the (meth)acrylic monomer comprises at least one acrylate or methacrylate selected from the group consisting of isobutyl methacrylate, tert-butyl-methacrylate, and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate

19 . The composition of claim 15 , wherein the (meth)acrylic monomer comprises isobutyl methacrylate

20 . The composition of claim 15 , further comprising a polycarboxylate dispersant.
