Abstract

A method of manufacturing customized ceramic labial/lingual orthodontic brackets by digital light processing, said method comprises measuring dentition data of a profile of teeth of a patient, wherein measuring dentition data is performed using a CT scanner or intra-oral scanner, based on the dentition data, creating a three dimensional computer-assisted design (3D CAD) model of the patient's teeth using reverse engineering, and saving the 3D CAD model on a computer, designing a 3D CAD bracket structure model for a single labial or lingual bracket structure, importing the 3D CAD bracket structure model into a Digital Light Processing (DLP) machine, directly producing the bracket by layer manufacturing.

Claims (31)

1 . (canceled)

2 . A method of manufacturing a customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket by additive manufacturing, said method comprising:

accessing data related to a 3D CAD bracket structure model for the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket, including data related to a bracket guide to guide 3-dimensional placement of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket onto a tooth, into an additive manufacturing machine; and

directly producing the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket and the bracket guide in the additive manufacturing machine by layer manufacturing, wherein a manufacturing accuracy is from 2 to about 60 micrometers (μm), and wherein a thickness of manufactured layers is from 5 to 100 μm based on resolution requirements of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the additive manufacturing machine comprises:

a digital light processing (DLP) machine; or

a stereolithographic machine.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the bracket guide comprises a rigid ceramic rectangular archwire or other archform.

5 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the rigid ceramic rectangular archwire or other archform dictates a position of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket on the tooth.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the bracket guide comprises at least two occlusal/incisal supports.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the at least two occlusal/incisal supports are adapted to facilitate placement of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket on the tooth.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least two occlusal/incisal supports are adapted to facilitate placement of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket on the tooth via an indirect bonding system.

9 . The method of claim 7 , wherein the at least two occlusal/incisal supports comprise a vertical notch.

10 . The method of claim 9 , wherein the vertical notch dictates a position of the rigid ceramic rectangular archwire or other archform.

11 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the 3 D CAD bracket structure model includes data representing a bracket pad.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the bracket guide comprises the bracket pad.

13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein an interface between the bracket guide and the bracket pad is serrated.

14 . At least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, causes the at least one processor to perform:

accessing data related to a 3D CAD bracket structure model for a customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket, including data related to a bracket guide to guide 3-dimensional placement of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket onto a tooth, into an additive manufacturing machine; and

directly producing the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket and the bracket guide in an additive manufacturing machine by layer manufacturing, wherein a manufacturing accuracy is from 2 to about 60 micrometers (μm), and wherein a thickness of manufactured layers is from 5 to 100 μm based on resolution requirements of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket.

15 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the additive manufacturing machine comprises:

a digital light processing (DLP) machine; or

a stereolithographic machine.

16 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the bracket guide comprises a rigid ceramic rectangular archwire or other archform.

17 . The at least one non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 14 , wherein the bracket guide comprises at least two occlusal/incisal supports.

18 . A customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket and bracket guide produced by additive manufacturing, wherein:

the bracket guide is for guiding 3 -dimensional placement of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket onto a tooth; and

a manufacturing accuracy of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket and the bracket guide is from 2 to about 60 micrometers (μm), and wherein a thickness of manufactured layers is from 5 to 100 μm based on resolution requirements of the customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket.

19 . The customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket and bracket guide of claim 18 , wherein the bracket guide comprises a rigid ceramic rectangular archwire or other archform.

20 . The customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket and bracket guide of claim 18 , wherein the bracket guide comprises at least two occlusal/incisal supports.

21 . The customized labial/lingual orthodontic bracket and bracket guide of claim 18 , wherein the bracket guide comprises the bracket pad.
