Abstract

Some embodiments of percutaneous ventricular assist devices have a two-part design that includes a housing component and a separately deployable rotatable inner catheter component. The housing component can include an expandable pump housing. The inner catheter can include an expandable pump impeller and an associated flexible drive shaft. The drive shaft can be coupled to a motor located external to the patient. The motor can rotate the drive shaft to spin the pump impeller inside of the pump housing, causing blood to be pumped within the patient. In some embodiments, the pump impeller is inflatable or self-expandable. The two-part percutaneous ventricular assist devices with inflatable or self-expandable pump impellers are designed to have very small delivery profiles. Accordingly, various deployment modalities, including radial artery deployment, are practicable using the two-part percutaneous ventricular assist devices described herein.

Claims (30)

1 . A balloon-based pump impeller attached to a drive shaft, wherein the pump impeller is constructed of a coextrusion comprising:

an outer material layer; and

a tie-layer disposed on an internal diameter surface of the outer material layer, wherein the coextrusion is formed to include:

an inflatable central body; and

one or more fins or ridges radially extending from the central body and comprised of two layers of the coextrusion that are fused together.

2 . The pump impeller of claim 1 , wherein the central body is expandable in response to receiving an inflation fluid supplied to the pump impeller via a lumen of the drive shaft.

3 . The pump impeller of claim 1 , wherein central the body comprises a tapered body.

4 . The pump impeller of claim 1 , wherein the one or more fins or ridges are disposed around only a portion of the central body.

5 . The pump impeller of claim 4 , wherein the portion of the body is a distal portion of the central body.

6 . The pump impeller of claim 5 , wherein the central body has a maximum diameter portion located between a proximal portion of the central body and the distal portion of the central body.

7 . The pump impeller of claim 6 , wherein the proximal portion of the central body has a smooth outer surface.

8 . The pump impeller of claim 1 , wherein two layers of the tie-layer are fused to each other at the one or more fins or ridges.

9 . A balloon-based pump impeller comprising:

a membrane material; and

a bonding material on an internal surface of the membrane material, wherein the membrane is formed to include:

an inflatable central body; and

one or more fins or ridges radially extending from the central body and comprised of two layers of the membrane material that are fused together by the bonding material.

10 . The pump impeller of claim 9 , wherein the central body is expandable in response to receiving an inflation fluid.

11 . The pump impeller of claim 9 , wherein the central body comprises a tapered body.

12 . The pump impeller of claim 9 , wherein the one or more fins or ridges are disposed around only a portion of the central body.

13 . The pump impeller of claim 12 , wherein the portion of the body is a distal portion of the central body.

14 . The pump impeller of claim 13 , wherein the central body has a maximum diameter portion located between a proximal portion of the central body and the distal portion of the central body.

15 . The pump impeller of claim 14 , wherein the proximal portion of the central body has a smooth outer surface.

16 . A balloon-based pump impeller, wherein the pump impeller is constructed of a membrane that is formed to include:

an inflatable central body; and

one or more fins or ridges radially extending from the central body and comprised of membrane layers that are fused together.

17 . The pump impeller of claim 16 , wherein the central body comprises a tapered body.

18 . The pump impeller of claim 16 , wherein the one or more fins or ridges are disposed around only a portion of the central body.

19 . The pump impeller of claim 18 , wherein the portion of the central body is a distal portion of the central body.

20 . The pump impeller of claim 19 , wherein the central body has a maximum diameter portion located between a proximal portion of the central body and the distal portion of the central body.
