Abstract

Bearing assemblies and methods of manufacturing bearing assemblies may include a base member and at least one bearing element coupled to the base member. The bearing element may be coupled with the base member by different coupling techniques, including: a mechanical fastener, a clamped structure, a geometrical fit, welding, and brazing.

Claims (25)

1 . A bearing assembly comprising:

a base comprising a front surface, a back surface, a plurality of pockets in the front surface, and a plurality of openings extending through the base, each opening of the plurality of openings extending from a bottom surface of a respective pocket of the plurality of pockets to the back surface;

a plurality of bearing elements each comprising a substrate and a superhard table, the substrate of each of the plurality of bearing elements positioned at least partially within a respective pocket of the plurality of pockets and with the superhard table of each of the plurality of bearing elements extending beyond the front surface; and

a plurality of mechanical fasteners, each mechanical fastener of the plurality of mechanical fasteners located within a respective opening of the plurality of openings and coupling a respective bearing element of the plurality of bearing elements to the base.

2 . The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein the mechanical fastener is coupled to the substrate, and wherein the substrate is brazed and/or welded to the base.

3 . The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein each of the plurality of bearing elements comprises a carrier member coupled to the substrate, and wherein the mechanical fastener is coupled to the carrier member, and wherein the substrate is brazed and/or welded to the base.

4 . The bearing assembly of claim 3 , wherein the carrier member is brazed and/or welded to both the substrate and the base.

5 . The bearing assembly of claim 3 , wherein the carrier member is contained entirely within the respective pocket.

6 . The bearing assembly of claim 3 , wherein each mechanical fastener of the plurality of mechanical fasteners is substantially flush with or substantially planar with the back surface of the base.

The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein each mechanical fastener of the plurality of mechanical fasteners is positioned at the back surface of the base to engage with a structure adjacent to the base in order to at least partially prevent movement of the mechanical fastener from the respective bearing element.

8 . The bearing assembly of claim 1 , wherein a head of each mechanical fastener of the plurality of mechanical fasteners is abutted with a shoulder of the base defined in each of the plurality of openings.

9 . A bearing assembly comprising:

a base comprising at least one pocket, the at least one pocket tapering in a radial direction from a radially inward end to a radially outward end, a width of the at least one pocket at the radially outward end being smaller than a width of the at least one pocket at the radially inward end; and

at least one bearing element located within the at least one pocket, the at least one bearing element is configured to be limited from movement in a radially outward direction by the at least one pocket.

10 . The bearing assembly of claim 9 , wherein a face of the base overhangs a bottom surface of the at least one pocket.

11 . The bearing assembly of claim 10 , wherein the at least one bearing element is limited from movement in an axial direction by a portion of the face that overhangs the bottom surface of the at least one pocket.

12 . The bearing assembly of claim 11 , wherein a sidewall of the at least one pocket extends at an angle from the bottom surface of the at least one pocket to the face of the base.

13 . The bearing assembly of claim 12 , wherein the at least one pocket further comprises a relief recess located where the sidewall meets the bottom surface.

14 . The bearing assembly of claim 9 , further comprising a shaft extending through the base, and wherein the at least one bearing element is limited from movement in a radially inward direction by the shaft.

15 . The bearing assembly of claim 9 , wherein the at least one pocket comprises a protrusion located on a bottom surface of the at least one pocket, the protrusion sized and located to facilitate tilting of the at least one bearing element within the at least one pocket.

16 . The bearing assembly of claim 9 , wherein the at least one bearing element is at least one of welded or brazed to the base.

17 . A bearing element comprising, a top bearing surface comprised of a superhard material, and an opposing bottom surface, the top bearing surface being generally wedged shaped with a width at a first end being larger than a width at an opposing second end, and the bottom surface extending laterally beyond the top bearing surface.

18 . The bearing element of claim 17 , further comprising a substrate bonded to a superhard table, the superhard table defining the top bearing surface.

19 . The bearing element of claim 18 , wherein the superhard table is a polycrystalline diamond table.

20 . The bearing element of claim 19 , wherein the substrate is a cobalt-cemented tungsten carbide substrate.
