Abstract

A golf ball is disclosed herein that has a specific set of aerodynamic characteristics and construction parameters.

Claims (140)

1 . A golf ball comprising at least a core, a casing layer, and a cover,

the core having a weight (W core ) of at least 1.245 ounces, a coefficient of restitution (COR core ) of at least 0.785, and a diameter (D core ) of at least 1.525 inches;

the cover comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ) and a lift coefficient (C L ), such that:

0.230≤C D1 ≤0.250 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070,

0.230≤C D2 ≤0.250 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and

0.230≤C D3 ≤0.250 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100;

the dimple pattern has an integrated drag area (DA) defined by:

where C D (Re) is established at a launch condition of a golf ball speed of 182.0 mph, a launch angle of 10.0 degrees, and a spin rate of 2,700 rpm, such that 14,500≤DA≤15,500; and

the golf ball having a coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) and an initial velocity (IV ball ) (in feet/second), such that a Speed Factor (S) is defined by the following equation:

2 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the Speed Factor (S) is at least 183.

3 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the Speed Factor (S) is 182-185.

4 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein 14,500≤DA≤15,250.

5 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein 14,750≤DA≤15,500.

6 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein CD 1 ≤0.245; CD 2 ≤0.245; and CD 3 ≤0.245.

7 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein CD 1 ≤0.240; CD 2 ≤0.240; and CD 3 ≤0.240.

8 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 220-270 dimples, with a surface coverage of 77.0%-83.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0400 in 3 -0.0575 in 3 .

9 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 340-390 dimples, with a surface coverage of 80.0%-85.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0350 in 3 -0.0425 in 3 .

10 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 280-420 dimples, with a surface coverage of 70.0%-81.0%, and has a maximum dimple diameter disparity of not greater than 0.040 inches.

11 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 270-320 dimples, with a surface coverage of 76.0%-85.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0350 in 3 -0.0440 in 3 .

12 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 490-620 dimples, with a surface coverage of 79.0%-85.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0175 in 3 -0.0375 in 3 .

13 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the dimple pattern is comprised of 390-490 dimples, with a surface coverage of 77.0%-86.0%, and a dimple volume of 0.0225 in 3 -0.0450 in 3 .

14 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core weight (W core ) is at least 1.260 ounces, the core coefficient of restitution (COR core ) is at least 0.770, and the core diameter (D core ) is at least 1.530 inches.

15 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core weight (W core ) is at least 1.280 ounces, the core coefficient of restitution (COR core ) is at least 0.785, and the core diameter (D core ) is at least 1.545 inches.

16 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a Flight Factor (F) defined by the following equation:

wherein the Flight Factor (F) is at least 120.

17 . The golf ball according to claim 16 , wherein the Flight Factor (F) is 120-160.

18 . The golf ball according to claim 16 , wherein the Flight Factor (F) is 125-140.

19 . The golf ball according to claim 16 , wherein a ratio of the Flight Factor (F) to the Speed Factor (S) is 0.600-0.750.

20 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein C L ≥0.115 at a Reynolds number of 240,000 and a spin ratio of 0.060, and

the drag coefficient and the lift coefficient at a Reynolds number of 225,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070 have the following relationship: 1.400≤C D /C L <2.000.
