Abstract

Disclosed are systems and methods that provide a novel framework for automatically and dynamically controlling operational modes of a ceiling fan based on real-time detected information related to a location (e.g., detected temperatures, heating or cooling demand, seasonal climate information and occupancy information). The framework can sense a temperature in/at a location (e.g., a temperature proximate to the ceiling fan), and leverage such temperature as input to determine which ceiling fan operation to execute. In some embodiments, occupancy data related to users' physical positioning respective to the ceiling fan can additionally be leveraged to discern the proper operation mode, and the mode's characteristics (e.g., speed and runtime). The framework can enable a reduction in resource expenditure (e.g., reduced energy usage and HVAC runtime, for example), as the ceiling fan can be utilized to maintain a location's temperature control without the need for heating or cooling operations of a HVAC system.

Claims (58)

1 . A method comprising:

collecting, by an application, sensor data related to a location, the location comprising at least one physical area having a ceiling fan positioned therein;

analyzing, by the application, the sensor data, and determining, a temperature associated with a temperature setpoint;

determining, by the application, an operational mode for the ceiling fan, the operational mode comprising instructions for the ceiling fan related to a direction and rate of rotation; and

causing, by the application, operation of the ceiling fan based on the determined operational mode.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining occupancy information within the location, the occupancy information indicating at least one of a quantity of people in the location, their positions within the location, or which parts of the location the people are located; and

performing the operational mode determination based on the occupancy information.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

monitoring the occupancy information, and determining to change the operational mode; and

automatically causing a modification to the caused operation based on the determination to change the operational mode.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the operational mode being a summer mode, the summer mode comprising the rotation being in a direction that propels air downwards.

5 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the operational mode being a winter mode, the winter mode comprising the rotation being in a direction that propels air upwards.

6 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

collecting sensor data from a sensor proximate to the ceiling fan; and

determining a temperature proximate to the ceiling fan, wherein the operational mode determination is further based on the temperature proximate to the ceiling fan.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

collecting geographical information for the location; and determining the operational mode based on the geographical information.

8 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining a change to a temperature associated with the location; and

causing modification of the operational mode based on the determined change.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the application executing on a thermostat within the location.

10 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising the application executing on a network location.

11 . A system comprising:

a processor configured to:

collect, by an application, sensor data related to a location, the location comprising at least one physical area having a ceiling fan positioned therein;

analyze, by the application, the sensor data, and determining, a temperature associated with a temperature setpoint;

determine, by the application, an operational mode for the ceiling fan, the operational mode comprising instructions for the ceiling fan related to a direction and rate of rotation; and

cause, by the application, operation of the ceiling fan based on the determined operational mode.

12 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine occupancy information within the location, the occupancy information indicating at least one of a quantity of people in the location, their positions within the location, or which parts of the location the people are located; and

perform the operational mode determination based on the occupancy information.

13 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

monitor the occupancy information, and determining to change the operational mode; and

automatically cause a modification to the caused operation based on the determination to change the operational mode.

14 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

collect geographical information for the location; and

determine the operational mode based on the geographical information.

15 . The system of claim 11 , wherein the processor is further configured to:

determine a change to a temperature associated with the location; and

cause modification of the operational mode based on the determined change.

16 . A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium tangibly encoded with computer-executable instructions that when executed by a device, perform a method comprising:

collecting, by an application, sensor data related to a location, the location comprising at least one physical area having a ceiling fan positioned therein;

analyzing, by the application, the sensor data, and determining, a temperature associated with a temperature setpoint;

determining, by the application, an operational mode for the ceiling fan, the operational mode comprising instructions for the ceiling fan related to a direction and rate of rotation; and

causing, by the application, operation of the ceiling fan based on the determined operational mode.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising:

determining occupancy information within the location, the occupancy information indicating at least one of a quantity of people in the location, their positions within the location, or which parts of the location the people are located; and

performing the operational mode determination based on the occupancy information.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising:

monitoring the occupancy information, and determining to change the operational mode; and

automatically causing a modification to the caused operation based on the determination to change the operational mode.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising:

collecting geographical information for the location; and

determining the operational mode based on the geographical information.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , further comprising:

determining a change to a temperature associated with the location; and

causing modification of the operational mode based on the determined change.
