Abstract

Methods, systems and devices for treating a patient include performing a first treatment to treat a first portion of tissue and performing a second treatment to treat a second portion of tissue. The second portion of tissue is treated at least twenty-four hours after the first portion of tissue is treated. In particular embodiments, the first portion of tissue includes duodenal tissue, and the second portion of tissue includes duodenal or other gastrointestinal tissue.

Claims (17)

1 . A method for treating a patient with diabetes comprising:

performing a first ablative treatment comprising ablatively treating a first portion of duodenal mucosa of the patient; and

performing a second ablative treatment comprising ablatively treating a second portion of the duodenal mucosa of the patient;

wherein the first and second portions are at least partially overlapping and each comprises a majority of the duodenal mucosa of the patient, and

wherein ablatively treating the first and second portions of the duodenal mucosa each comprises multiple treatment steps, the multiple treatment steps comprising sequentially treating a plurality of segments of the duodenal mucosa of the patient.

2 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first ablative treatment is performed with a first treatment device, wherein the second ablative treatment is performed with a second treatment device, and wherein the first treatment device and the second treatment device are similar.

3 . The method according to claim 2 , wherein the first treatment device is configured to ablate the first portion of the duodenal mucosa of the patient via heating of duodenal mucosal tissue.

4 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method is performed to treat a disease or disorder selected from the group consisting of: diabetes; obesity; insulin resistance; a metabolic disorder and/or disease; and combinations thereof.

5 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first or second ablative treatment comprises a treatment selected from the group consisting of delivery of thermal energy from a balloon filled with fluid at an ablative temperature; RF energy ablation; delivery of an ablative fluid directly to tissue; cryoablation; delivery of laser energy; delivery of sound energy, such as subsonic sound energy or ultrasonic sound energy; and combinations thereof.

6 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the method further comprises expanding one or more layers of duodenal tissue.

7 . The method according to claim 6 , wherein the tissue expansion comprises expansion of duodenal submucosal tissue.

8 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the second ablative treatment is performed at least 24 hours after the first ablative treatment is performed.

9 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein the second ablative treatment is performed at least 1 week after the first ablative treatment is performed.

10 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first ablative treatment comprises treating at least a full circumferential portion of duodenal mucosa.

11 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the first ablative treatment and the second ablative treatment are performed in different clinical procedures.

12 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the wherein the first or second ablative treatment comprises delivery of electrical energy to the duodenal mucosa.

13 . The method according to claim 1 , wherein the plurality of segments are treated in order from a proximal-most segment to distal-most segment or from the distal-most segment to the proximal-most segment of the duodenal mucosa of the patient.
