Abstract

An indoor positioning system for use in wayfinding and navigation that provides location with limited infrastructure. The positioning system comprising at least one transceiver transmitting one or more signals used by at least two additional transceivers to calculate an estimated location of the first transceiver for use by other systems for wayfinding and navigation.

Claims (21)

1 . A method for locating a device in an indoor facility, the method comprising:

transmitting, by a first transceiver to a second transceiver and a third transceiver, a first signal;

determining, by a processor, a first time delay of arrival (TDoA) and a first angle of arrival (AoA) of the first signal based on the second transceiver receiving the first signal;

determining, by the processor, a second TDoA and second AoA of the first signal based on the third transceiver receiving the first signal;

calculating, based on the first TDoA, the first AoA, the second TDoA, and the second AoA, an estimated location of the first transceiver in relation to an anchor device; and

calculating, based on the first TDoA, the first AoA, the second TDoA, and the second AoA, an estimated uncertainty of the location of the first transceiver in relation to the anchor device.

2 . An indoor positioning system comprising:

a portable device located within a facility, the portable device comprising a first transceiver for transmitting a first location signal and receiving a second location signal, wherein the first location signal comprises a unique identifier of the first transceiver and a time of transmission for the first location signal;

an anchor device comprising a second transceiver to receive the first location signal from the portable device or to transmit the second location signal to the portable device, signal, wherein the second location signal comprises a unique identifier of the second transceiver and a time of transmission for the second location signal; and

a location server configured to determine a relative position of the portable device within the facility based at least on a first time delay of arrival (TDoA) and a first angle of arrival (AoA) of the first location signal received at the second transceiver, and

wherein the portable device further comprises a processor to determine a relative position of the portable device within the facility based at least on a second TDoA and a second AoA of the second location signal received at the portable device.

3 . An indoor positioning system comprising:

a first transceiver comprising a first plurality of antennas configured in an L-shaped pattern on the first transceiver and a first processor, the first processor configured to:

receive, at a first antenna of the first plurality of antennas, a first location signal;

receive, at a second antenna of the first plurality of antennas, the first location signal; and

determine a time delay of arrival (TDoA) and an angle of arrival (AoA) of the first location signal; and

a second transceiver comprising a second plurality of antennas configured in an L-shaped pattern on the second transceiver and a second processor, the second processor configured to:

receive, at a first antenna of the second plurality of antennas, a second location signal;

receive, at a second antenna of the second plurality of antennas, the second location signal; and

determine a TDoA and an AoA of the second location signal,

wherein the first plurality of antennas and the second plurality of antennas are located within a facility with at least partial overlapping zones of coverage.
