Abstract

There are disclosed systems, methods, and computer-readable media for local positioning. A method includes placing a plurality of anchors within a facility; placing three or more calibration tags at respective predetermined positions within the facility; measuring respective distances between each anchor of the plurality of anchors and at least three of the three or more calibration tags; calculating a respective calculated location of each of the plurality of anchors based on the predetermined positions of the plurality of calibration tags and the measured distances; and determining a position of a first movable tag based on respective distances between at least some of the plurality of anchors and the first movable tag and the respective calculated locations of the at least some of the plurality of anchors.

Claims (45)

1 . A method comprising:

placing a plurality of anchors within a facility;

placing three or more calibration tags at respective predetermined positions within the facility;

measuring respective distances between each anchor of the plurality of anchors and at least three of the three or more calibration tags;

calculating a respective calculated location of each of the plurality of anchors based on the predetermined positions of the plurality of calibration tags and the measured distances; and

determining a position of a first movable tag based on respective distances between at least some of the plurality of anchors and the first movable tag and the respective calculated locations of the at least some of the plurality of anchors.

2 . The method of claim 1 wherein measuring respective distances comprises ultra-wideband communications.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein measuring respective distances comprises two-way ranging.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein measuring respective distances comprises time of flight ranging.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein measuring respective distances comprises time difference of arrival ranging.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein

a sampling rate at which the position of the first movable tag is determined is based on one or more of the position of the first movable tag, a velocity of the first movable tag, and an acceleration of the first movable tag.

7 . The method of claim 1 wherein:

the first movable tag is one of a plurality of movable tags, and

the method further comprises recurrently determining a respective position of each of the plurality of movable tags.

8 . The method of claim 1 wherein the facility comprises a playing area, and the predetermined positions of the plurality of calibration tags comprise predetermined points on the playing area.

9 . A local positioning system comprising:

a plurality of anchors placed within a facility;

three or more calibration tags temporarily placed at respective predetermined positions within the facility; and

a computing device for:

instructing the plurality of anchors and the plurality of calibration tags to measure respective distances between each anchor of the plurality of anchors and at least three of the three or more calibration tags;

calculating a respective calculated location of each of the plurality of anchors based on the predetermined positions of the plurality of calibration tags and the measured distances; and

determining a position of a first movable tag based on respective distances between at least some of the plurality of anchors and the first movable tag and the respective calculated locations of the at least some of the plurality of anchors.

10 . The local positioning system of claim 9 , wherein

a sampling rate at which the position of the first movable tag is determined is based on one or more of the position of the first movable tag, a velocity of the first movable tag, and an acceleration of the first movable tag.

11 . The local positioning system of claim 9 , wherein:

the first movable tag is one of a plurality of movable tags, and

the method further comprises recurrently determining a respective position of each of the plurality of movable tags.

12 . The local positioning system of claim 9 , wherein the facility comprises a playing area, and the predetermined positions of the plurality of calibration tags comprise predetermined points on the playing area.

13 . Apparatus comprising a non-volatile machine-readable medium storing a program having instructions which when executed by a computing device will cause the computing device to:

communicate with a plurality of anchors within a facility;

communicate with three or more calibration tags placed at respective predetermined positions within the facility;

instruct the plurality of anchors and the plurality of calibration tags to measure respective distances between each anchor of the plurality of anchors and at least three of the three or more calibration tags;

calculate a respective calculated location of each of the plurality of anchors based on the predetermined positions of the plurality of calibration tags and the measured distances; and

determine a position of a first movable tag based on respective distances between at least some of the plurality of anchors and the first movable tag and the respective calculated locations of the at least some of the plurality of anchors.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein

a sampling rate at which the position of the first movable tag is determined is based on one or more of the position of the first movable tag, a velocity of the first movable tag, and an acceleration of the first movable tag.

15 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein:

the first movable tag is one of a plurality of movable tags, and

the method further comprises recurrently determining a respective position of each of the plurality of movable tags.

16 . The apparatus of claim 13 , wherein the facility comprises a playing area, and the predetermined positions of the plurality of calibration tags comprise predetermined points on the playing area.

17 . The apparatus of claim 13 further comprising:

a processor;

a memory;

wherein the processor and the memory comprise circuits and software for performing the instructions on the machine-readable medium.
