Abstract

Systems, methods, and apparatus for identifying and tracking UAVs including a computing device and a Wi-Fi sensor. The computing device can receive Wi-Fi data from the Wi-Fi sensor comprising an RSSI and a MAC address. The computing device can determine an estimated proximity of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on the RSSI. The computing device can compare the estimated proximity to a signal threshold. The computing device can determine whether the MAC address matches one of a plurality of known UAV MAC addresses. The computing device can apply rule set to determine an action to take. The computing device can perform the action.

Claims (43)

1 . A method, comprising:

receiving, via one of one or more computing device, Wi-Fi data from a Wi-Fi sensor comprising a received signal strength indicator (RSSI);

determining, via one of the one or more computing device, an estimated proximity of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on the RSSI;

comparing, via one of the one or more computing device, the estimated proximity to a signal threshold;

applying, via one of the one or more computing device, a rule set to determine an action to take; and

performing, via one of the one or more computing device, the action.

2 . The method of claim Error! Bookmark not defined., further comprising iteratively tuning, via one of the one or more computing device, the Wi-Fi sensor to one of a plurality of channels for a specific time at each channel.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, via one of the one or more computing device, whether a MAC address matches one of a plurality of known UAV MAC addresses, wherein the Wi-Fi data comprises the MAC address.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the rule set is applied in response to the estimated proximity exceeding the signal threshold and the MAC address matching one of the plurality of known UAV MAC addresses.

5 . The method of claim 3 , further comprising determining a manufacturer of the UAV based on the MAC address.

6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the Wi-Fi data further comprises an SSID, and the method further comprises determining, via one of the one or more computing device, whether the SSID matches one of a plurality of known SSIDs.

7 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising determining, via one of the one or more computing device, a confidence level based on the rule set.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the action comprises sending, via one of the one or more computing device, an alert regarding the UAV to a user device.

9 . A system, comprising

a data store; and

at least one computing device in communication with the data store, the at least one computing device being configured to:

receive Wi-Fi data from a Wi-Fi sensor comprising an RSSI;

determine an estimated proximity of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on the RSSI;

compare the estimated proximity to a signal threshold;

apply rule set to determine an action to take; and

perform the action.

10 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the Wi-Fi data is received via a first Wi-Fi signal and the at least one computing device is further configured to:

receive a second Wi-Fi signal;

determine a second estimated proximity of the second Wi-Fi signal;

compare the second estimated proximity to the signal threshold; and

in response to the second estimated proximity failing to meet the signal threshold, disregard the second Wi-Fi signal.

11 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one computing device is further configured to receive the Wi-Fi data by sniffing Wi-Fi signals in a non-connected state with a Wi-Fi network corresponding to the Wi-Fi data.

12 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the Wi-Fi data further comprises an SSID and the at least one computing device is further configured to determine whether a combination of the SSID and a MAC address matches one of a plurality of known UAV SSID and MAC addresses combinations.

13 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the action comprises determining a location of a UAV controller.

14 . The system of claim 9 , wherein the at least one computing device is further configured to assign a confidence level to the Wi-Fi data.

15 . A non-transitory computer-readable medium embodying a program that, when executed by at least one computing device, causes the at least one computing device to:

receive Wi-Fi data from a Wi-Fi sensor comprising an RSSI;

determine an estimated proximity of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) based on the RSSI;

compare the estimated proximity to a signal threshold;

apply rule set to determine an action to take; and

perform the action.

16 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the Wi-Fi data further comprises an SSID and the program further causes the at least one computing device to:

determine that the SSID matches one of a plurality of known UAV SSIDs; and

determine that the SSID is at least one of: trusted or not trusted based on metadata associated with the one of the plurality of known UAV SSIDs.

17 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the Wi-Fi data further comprises an SSID and the program further causes the at least one computing device to analyze the SSID to determine network identification.

18 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the action comprises engaging forcefully with a UAV corresponding to the Wi-Fi data.

19 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the program further causes the at least one computing device to determine whether to continue receiving the Wi-Fi data.

20 . The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 15 , wherein the program further causes the at least one computing device to tune the Wi-Fi sensor to a plurality of channels.
