Abstract

Golf balls disclosed herein have a combination of aerodynamic properties and construction parameters providing a desired set of performance characteristics.

Claims (191)

1 . A golf ball comprising at least a core and a cover,

the cover comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ) and a lift coefficient (C L ), such that:

C D1 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070,

C D2 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and

C D3 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100;

the dimple pattern having an integrated drag area (DA) defined by:

where C D (Re) is established at a launch condition of a golf ball speed of 182.0 mph, a launch angle of 10.0 degrees, and a spin rate of 2,700 rpm, such that DA≤14,000;

the golf ball having a weight of 1.600 ounces-1.620 ounces and a diameter of 1.680 inches-1.700 inches, the core having a weight (W core ) of at least 1.245 ounces and a diameter (D core ) of at least 1.525 inches; and

wherein:

(i) the golf ball has a compression that is less than 60, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is less than 0.785;

(ii) the golf ball has a compression of at least 60 and less than 80, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is less than 0.775;

(iii) the golf ball has a compression of at least 80 and less than 100, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is less than 0.755; or

(iv) the golf ball has a compression that is at least 100, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is less than 0.725.

2 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein:

C D1 ≤0.225 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070,

C D2 ≤0.225 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and

C D3 ≤0.225 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100.

3 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a Speed Factor(S) defined by the following equation:

where (COR ball ) is the golf ball coefficient of restitution, and (IV ball ) is the golf ball initial velocity (feet/second), and

wherein the Speed Factor(S) is less than 177.

4 . The golf ball according to claim 3 , wherein the Speed Factor is less than 176.

5 . The golf ball according to claim 3 , wherein the Speed Factor is less than 175.

6 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core weight (W core ) is at least 1.260 ounces and the core diameter (D core ) is at least 1.530 inches.

7 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core weight (W core ) is at least 1.275 ounces and the core diameter (D core ) is at least 1.545 inches.

8 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the core weight (W core ) is at least 1.300 ounces and the core diameter (D core ) is at least 1.545 inches.

9 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball has a Flight Factor (F) defined by the following equation:

where (IV ball ) is the golf ball initial velocity (feet/second) and (COR core ) is the core coefficient of restitution, wherein the Flight Factor (F) is at least 120.

10 . The golf ball according claim 1 , wherein the integrated drag area (DA) is defined such that: DA≤13,750.

11 . The golf ball according claim 1 , wherein the integrated drag area (DA) is defined such that: DA≤13,500.

12 . The golf ball according claim 1 , wherein the integrated drag area (DA) is defined such that: DA≤13,250.

13 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein a coefficient of restitution (COR) of the core is no greater than 0.740.

14 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein a coefficient of restitution (COR) of the core is no greater than 0.700.

15 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein a coefficient of restitution (COR) of the core is no greater than 0.670.

16 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is less than 60, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is less than 0.785.

17 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is at least 60 and less than 80, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is less than 0.775.

18 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is at least 80 and less than 100, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is less than 0.755.

19 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the golf ball compression is at least 100, and the golf ball coefficient of restitution (COR ball ) is less than 0.725.

20 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the drag coefficient (C D ) and the lift coefficient (C L ) at a Reynolds number of 225,000, and spin ratio of 0.070 have the following relationship: 1.350≤C D /C L <1.550.

21 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the drag coefficient (C D ) and the lift coefficient (C L ) at a Reynolds number of 225,000, and spin ratio of 0.070 have the following relationship: 1.550≤C D /C L <1.750.

22 . The golf ball according to claim 1 , wherein the drag coefficient (C D ) and the lift coefficient (C L ) at a Reynolds number of 225,000, and spin ratio of 0.070 have the following relationship: 1.750≤C D /C L ≤1.950.

23 . A golf ball comprising at least a core and a cover,

the cover comprising a plurality of dimples arranged in a dimple pattern having a drag coefficient (C D ) and a lift coefficient (C L ), such that:

C D1 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 220,000 and a spin ratio of 0.070,

C D2 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 160,000 and a spin ratio of 0.095, and

C D3 ≤0.230 at a Reynolds number of 120,000 and a spin ratio of 0.100;
