Abstract

Examples of systems and methods for rendering an avatar in a mixed reality environment are disclosed. The systems and methods may be configured to automatically scale an avatar or to render an avatar based on a determined intention of a user, an interesting impulse, environmental stimuli, or user saccade points. The disclosed systems and methods may apply discomfort curves when rendering an avatar. The disclosed systems and methods may provide a more realistic interaction between a human user and an avatar.

Claims (39)

1 . A system of rendering a virtual avatar based on a first user's intent in a first environment, the system comprising

a hardware processor programmed to:

extract environmental information of the first environment from a plurality of sensors;

identify a plurality of potential objects of interest based at least partly on received environmental information;

determine an object of interest based at least partly on received environmental information, wherein the object of interest is determined by:

extending a vector from the first user towards each potential object of interest and a sight line vector extending from the first user outwards directly in front of the first user;

assigning an interest weight value to each potential object of interest, wherein the interest weight value of a potential object of interest dynamically changes to reflect changes in the environmental information; and

calculating an overall interest value for each potential object of interest, wherein the overall interest value for a potential object of interest is based at least partly on the interest weight value for the potential object of interest;

communicate object of interest information to a remote computing device, wherein object of interest information comprises at least an identifier representing the object of interest;

receive communicated object of interest information from a remote computing device; and

adjust at least one of a position or orientation of the virtual avatar based at least partly on the object of interest information received from the remote computing device; and

a non-transitory computer-readable medium configured to store instructions to execute a process of rendering a virtual avatar based at least partly on received object of interest information.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein environmental information comprises a head pose or eye pose of a user or a presence of a plurality of virtual objects.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of sensors comprises an outward-facing imaging system which observes the world in an environment around the first user, and an inward-facing imaging system which can track movement of the first user's eyes.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the object of interest is further determined by calculating a dot product between a vector associated with a potential object of interest and the first user's sight line vector.

5 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the object of interest is determined whenever a change in condition in an environment around the first user is detected, wherein the change in condition comprises: a change in the first user's pose, a change in the first user's position in the environment, a change in position of a potential object of interest.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the object of interest is determined based at least partly on a head pose of the first user and the first user's semantic interest.

7 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the object of interest is further determined by performing ray casting from the first user towards a direction of the first user's sight line vector.

8 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the object of interest information further comprises an offset angle between a vector associated with a potential object of interest and a user's sight line vector.

9 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the at least one of the position or orientation of the virtual avatar is adjusted by rotating at least a portion of the virtual avatar to face a location of the object of interest by an offset angle between a vector associated with a potential object of interest and the first user's sight line vector.

10 . A method of rendering a virtual avatar based on a first user's intent in a first environment, the method comprising:

accessing pose data of a first user, wherein pose data comprises at least an eye pose or head pose;

identifying a plurality of potential objects of interest in an environment of the first user based at least partly on the pose data of the first user;

determining an object of interest to the first user from the plurality of potential objects of interest in the environment of the first user based at least partly on the pose data of the first user;

communicating object of interest information to a second user, wherein object of interest information comprises at least an identifier representing the object of interest;

receiving object of interest information from the first user;

identifying a location of the object of interest in a second environment with respect to a virtual avatar in the second environment; and

adjusting at least one of a position or orientation of the virtual avatar in a second environment based at least partly on the location of the object of interest in the second environment with respect to the virtual avatar in the second environment.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the accessing pose data of the first user is done by an outward-facing imaging system which observes the world in an environment around the first user, and an inward-facing imaging system which tracks movement of the first user's eyes.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the determining the object of interest comprises:

extending a vector from the first user towards each potential object of interest and a sight line vector extending from the first user outwards directly in front of the first user;

assigning an interest weight value to each potential object of interest, wherein the interest weight value of a potential object of interest dynamically changes to reflect changes in the environment; and

calculating an overall interest value for each potential object of interest, wherein the overall interest value for a potential object of interest is based at least partly on the interest weight value for the potential object of interest.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the determining the object of interest further comprises calculating a dot product between a vector associated with a potential object of interest and the first user's sight line vector.

14 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the determining the object of interest occurs whenever a change in condition in the environment around the first user is detected, wherein the change in condition comprises: a change in the first user's pose, a change in the first user's position in the environment, a change in position of a potential object of interest.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the determining the object of interest is based at least partly on the head pose of the first user and the first user's semantic interest.

16 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the determining the object of interest further comprises performing ray casting from the first user towards a direction of the first user's sight line vector.

17 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the object of interest information further comprises an offset angle between a vector associated with a potential object of interest and the first user's sight line vector.

18 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the adjusting the at least one of the position or orientation of the virtual avatar comprises rotating the virtual avatar to face the location of the object of interest by an offset angle between a vector associated with a potential object of interest and the first user's sight line vector.
