Abstract

A modular flow monitoring package (MFMP) is provided for use in an additive delivery system. The MFMP may be manufactured as an add-on to be added to an existing additive delivery system, or may be incorporated into a cartridge or container structure. The MFMP includes a flow sensor for sensing flow of a base fluid and user actuator position sensors for sensing the position of one or more user actuated additive flow adjustment levers. A visual display, which may comprise an array of multi-color LED's may convey information to a user that is relevant to a user's use of the additive delivery system or the user's nutritional needs. Such information may include a current dosage of additive, being delivered, whether a recommended dosage of additive has been consumed, remaining life of a cartridge or supply of additive, and other data relative to health or performance monitoring.

Claims (38)

1 .- 9 . (canceled)

10 . An additive cartridge including:

a base fluid flow path for a base fluid flow from an inlet to an outlet;

an additive container holding an additive for mixing with the base fluid flow;

a flow monitoring package including a flow sensor for sensing a fluid flow, the flow sensor being attached to the additive container; and

a port for fluidly coupling the additive container to the base fluid flow path at a location between the inlet and the outlet.

11 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the flow sensor is for sensing base fluid flow in the base fluid flow path.

12 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , in combination with a drinking water bottle wherein the additive cartridge is replaceable.

13 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the flow monitoring package is configured to sense a position of a user actuated flow adjuster operable to adjust a flow of the additive into the base fluid flow path.

14 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the port is in fluid communication with a mixing zone in which the additive mixes with the base fluid flow.

15 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the additive cartridge is adjustable by a user to adjust an amount of additive added to the base fluid flow.

16 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the additive is liquid.

17 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , further comprising a user actuated control for controlling an amount of additive added from the additive container to the base fluid flow.

18 . The additive cartridge of claim 17 , further comprising a position sensor for sensing the position of the user actuated control.

19 . The additive cartridge of claim 18 , the flow monitoring package further including a visual indicator for displaying dosage related information to a user based on base fluid flow and the position of the user actuated control.

20 . The additive cartridge of claim 19 , wherein the visual indicator comprises at least one LED.

21 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , further comprising an end-of-life indicator for indicating the end-of-life of the additive cartridge.

22 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the flow sensor comprises a magnetic turbine disposed in the base fluid flow path and a Hall effect sensor for sensing rotation of the magnetic turbine.

23 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the additive cartridge is configured to add additive to base fluid flow in response to base fluid flow through the base fluid flow path.

24 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the additive cartridge is configured to add additive to base fluid flow in response to base fluid flow through an intake port.

25 . The additive cartridge of claim 24 , wherein the intake port is formed on an intake tube in fluid communication with the additive cartridge.

26 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , further comprising a spout adapted to dispense liquid from the additive cartridge and further comprising a mixing zone positioned between the spout and the additive container.

27 . The additive cartridge of claim 10 , wherein the additive cartridge is adapted to be screw-fit onto a base fluid container.

28 . An additive cartridge comprising:

a base fluid flow path for base fluid flow;

an additive container holding an additive for mixing with base fluid flow;

an additive flow path for additive flow from the additive container to the base fluid flow path for mixing with base fluid flow through the base fluid flow path;

a flow measuring device for measuring additive flow; and

a flow adjustment device for permitting a user to adjust an amount of additive added to base fluid flow.

29 . The additive cartridge of claim 28 , further comprising a user interface for conveying information to the user about the additive.

30 . The additive cartridge of claim 29 , wherein the user interface includes a visual display for indicating whether a predetermined consumption of additive has been attained.

31 . The additive cartridge of claim 29 , wherein the user interface includes a visual display for indicating a remaining life of a supply of additive.

32 . The additive cartridge of claim 29 , wherein the user interface comprises a plurality of discrete optical indicators.

33 . The additive cartridge of claim 28 , wherein the flow adjustment device is rotatable by the user to adjust the amount of additive added to base fluid flow.
