Abstract

A weighing system for medical applications may include a basin that has a base and a sloped sidewall that collectively form a bounded cavity with open top surface that receives and holds the material to be weighed. The basin may be free floating above the weighing device within a restricted range of travel. In some examples, the weighing system includes a thermal treatment device to adjust the temperature of the material in the basin. The rate at which heat is delivered to the basin may vary depending on the weight of the contents in the basin.

Claims (30)

1 . A thermal treatment system comprising:

a basin configured to receive and hold a variable volume of surgical fluid;

a thermal treatment device thermally coupled to the basin and configured to adjust a temperature of the fluid;

a temperature sensor;

a volume measurement device configured to measure volume information relevant to a volume of surgical fluid in the basin;

a user interface configured to receive a user input comprising information relevant to the volume of surgical fluid in the basin; and

a controller in communication with the thermal treatment device, the temperature sensor, the volume measurement device, and the user interface, the controller configured to determine the volume of surgical fluid in the basin based at least in part on the volume information received from the volume measurement device and the user input received from the user interface.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the volume measurement device conveys the volume information to the controller.

3 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the volume measurement device comprises a weight measurement device positioned to measure a weight of the basin and contents of the basin.

4 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the thermal treatment device comprises a thin-film heater overlapping at least part of a base of the basin.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the thin-film heater wraps at least partially around a sidewall of basin.

6 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user input comprises a first indication that a non-fluid component is to be added to the basin.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the user input comprises a second indication that the non-fluid component has been added to the basin.

8 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the controller determines without a second indication that the non-fluid component has been added to the basin.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the determination that the non-fluid component has been added to the basin is based at least in part on passage of a predetermined threshold amount of time.

10 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the non-fluid component comprises a tool.

11 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the tool comprises a bulb syringe or a graduated measuring container.

12 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user input comprises an indication that surgical fluid is being added to the basin.

13 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprises one or more of a button, a foot actuatable peddle, a touch screen, a selectable icon, or a data entry field.

14 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprises a microphone.

15 . The system of claim 14 , wherein the user input comprises an audible command.

16 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface comprises an optical detector.

17 . The system of claim 16 , wherein the user input comprises image recognition.

18 . A thermal treatment system comprising:

a basin configured to receive and hold a variable volume of material to be temperature controlled;

a volume measurement device configured to measure information indicative of the volume of material in the basin and to convey volume information to a controller;

a user interface configured to receive a user input comprising information indicative of the volume of material in the basin and to convey user information to the controller; and

wherein the controller is in communication with the volume measurement device and the user interface, and the controller is configured to track the volume of material in the basin based at least in part on the volume information received from the volume measurement device and the user information received from the user interface.

19 . The system of claim 18 , where the user information comprises information indicative of material being added to the basin.

20 . The system of claim 19 , where the user information comprises information indicative of material being removed from the basin.
