Abstract

A method for intraoperatively augmenting a revision implant includes removing a primary implant from a bone, intraoperatively determining a size of a defect of the bone, intraoperatively cutting a bone filler material to the size of the defect, installing the bone filler material at the defect, and installing the revision implant on the bone.

Claims (42)

1 . A method for intraoperatively augmenting a revision implant, comprising:

removing a primary implant from a bone;

intraoperatively determining a size of a defect of the bone;

intraoperatively cutting a bone filler material to the size of the defect;

installing the bone filler material at the defect; and

installing the revision implant on the bone.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein intraoperatively determining the size of the defect comprises tracking a probe as the probe touches points on a surface of the bone exposed by removal of the primary implant from the bone.

3 . The method of claim 1 , comprising generating a virtual model of the defect.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the bone filler material is a cone.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein removing the primary implant comprises:

capturing positions of a tracked probe as the tracked probe contacts an interface area between the bone and the primary implant;

generating a virtual boundary corresponding to a portion of the interface area to be removed to detach the primary implant from the bone using the positions of the tracked probe; and

providing a constraint on operation of a cutting tool while the cutting tool removes the portion of the interface area, the constraint based on a relationship between the cutting tool and the virtual boundary.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein installing the revision implant on the bone comprises:

generating an additional virtual boundary associated with a planned cut to prepare the bone to receive the revision implant; and

providing an additional constraint on the cutting tool while the cutting tool performs the planned cut.

7 . The method of claim 1 , comprising providing virtual models of the bone and the revision implant.

8 . The method of claim 1 , comprising performing cutting of the bone with a rotary burr.

9 . The method of claim 1 , comprising automatically selecting the bone filler material based on the size of the defect.

10 . The method of claim 1 , comprising automatically selecting the bone filler material based on density of the bone.

11 . A method for intraoperatively augmenting an implant, comprising:

performing a first cut of a bone;

intraoperatively determining a size of a defect of the bone;

intraoperatively cutting a bone filler material based on to the size of the defect;

installing the bone filler material at the defect; and

installing the implant on the bone.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein intraoperatively determining the size of the defect comprises tracking a probe as the probe touches points on a surface of the bone exposed by performing the first cut of the bone.

13 . The method of claim 11 , comprising generating a virtual model of the defect.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first cut removes a primary implant from the bone.

15 . The method of claim 11 , comprising providing cutting by controlling a robotic device coupled to a cutting tool.

16 . The method of claim 11 , comprising automatically selecting the bone filler material based on the size of the defect.

17 . The method of claim 11 , comprising automatically selecting the bone filler material based on density of the bone.

18 . The method of claim 11 , comprising removing a primary implant from the bone.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein removing the primary implant comprises:

capturing positions of a tracked probe as the tracked probe contacts an interface area between the bone and the primary implant;

generating a virtual boundary corresponding to a portion of the interface area to be removed to detach the primary implant from the bone using the positions of the tracked probe; and

providing a constraint on operation of a cutting tool while the cutting tool removes the portion of the interface area, the constraint based on a relationship between the cutting tool and the virtual boundary.

20 . A method for intraoperatively augmenting an implant, comprising:

intraoperatively determining a size of a defect of the bone;

automatically selecting a biomaterial filler for the defect based on the size of the defect and material based on to the size of the defect and density of the bone;

installing the bone filler material at the defect; and

installing the implant on the bone.
