Abstract

Devices and methods establish and facilitate retrograde or reverse flow blood circulation in the region of the carotid artery bifurcation in order to limit or prevent the release of emboli into the cerebral vasculature such as into the internal carotid artery. The methods are particularly useful for interventional procedures performed through a transcarotid approach or transfemoral into the common carotid artery.

Claims (29)

1 . A system for treating a carotid artery, the system comprising:

an arterial access sheath configured to be disposed within a carotid artery;

a flow control assembly coupled to the arterial access sheath, the flow control assembly configured to regulate flow through the arterial access sheath between a first flow state, a second flow state, and a third flow state; and

a venous return sheath coupled to the flow control assembly, the venous return sheath being configured to be disposed within a vein.

2 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the first flow state includes a high flow rate.

3 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the second flow state includes a low flow rate.

4 . The system of claim 2 , wherein the second flow state substantially stops flow through the arterial access sheath.

5 . The system of claim 4 , wherein the third flow state includes an intermediate flow rate.

6 . The system of claim 1 , further comprising an actuator assembly coupled to the flow control assembly, the actuator assembly being configured to transition flow between the first flow state and the second flow state.

7 . The system of claim 6 , wherein the actuator assembly is configured to transition flow between the first flow state and the third flow state.

8 . The system of claim 7 , wherein the actuator assembly is configured to transition flow between the second flow state and the third flow state.

9 . The system of claim 8 , wherein the actuator assembly includes a first control member and a second control member.

10 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the flow control assembly includes a filter.

11 . The system of claim 1 , wherein the flow control assembly includes a housing having a first housing component and a second housing component releasably coupled to the first housing component.

12 . A flow control assembly for controlling blood flow through a catheter system, the flow control assembly comprising:

a housing having an inlet and an outlet; and

an actuator assembly coupled to the housing, the actuator assembly being configured to transition the flow control assembly between a first flow state, a second flow state different from the first flow state, and a third flow state different from the first flow state and the second flow state.

13 . The flow control assembly of claim 11 , wherein the first flow state includes a high flow rate.

14 . The flow control assembly of claim 13 , wherein the second flow state includes a low flow rate.

15 . The flow control assembly of claim 13 , wherein the second flow state substantially stops flow through the arterial access sheath.

16 . The flow control assembly of claim 15 , wherein the third flow state includes an intermediate flow rate.

17 . The flow control assembly of claim 12 , wherein the actuator assembly includes a first control member and a second control member.

18 . A system for treating a carotid artery, the system comprising:

an arterial access sheath configured to be disposed within a carotid artery;

a flow control assembly coupled to the arterial access sheath, the flow control assembly including a housing comprising a first housing component and a second housing component releasably coupled to the first housing component;

wherein the flow control assembly includes an actuator assembly configured to transition the flow control assembly between a high flow state, a low flow state, and a no flow state; and

a venous return sheath coupled to the flow control assembly, the venous return sheath being configured to be disposed within a vein.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the actuator assembly includes a first control member and a second control member.

20 . The system of claim 18 , further comprising a filter removably disposed within the housing.
