Abstract

Systems and methods described herein include implementation of road surface-based localization techniques for advanced vehicle features and control methods including advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), lane drift detection, passing guidance, bandwidth conservation and caching based on road data, vehicle speed correction, suspension and vehicle system performance tracking and control, road estimation calibration, and others.

Claims (32)

1 . A vehicle comprising:

a localization system configured to determine a location of the vehicle on a road surface;

a display; and

at least one processor configured to perform the steps of:

obtaining a location of the vehicle from the localization system;

determining a presence of one or more road surface features on the road surface based at least in part on the location of the vehicle; and

presenting on the display a position of the one or more road surface features on the road surface.

2 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the position is determined at least partially based on road surface information downloaded from a cloud-based database.

3 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the display is selected from the group consisting of a heads-up display and a monitor.

4 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to present, on the display, a projected tire path of at least one tire of the vehicle relative to the one or more road surface features.

5 . The vehicle of claim 3 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to present, on the display, a projected tire path of two tires of the vehicle.

6 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the one or more road surface features comprises a pothole or a bump.

7 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the at least one processor is further configured to obtain a size of the one or more road surface features.

8 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the presenting comprises overlaying a graphical representation of the one or more road surface features on an image of the road surface.

9 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the display is a heads-up display and the presenting comprises overlaying, using the display, a graphical representation of the one or more road surface features on the road surface.

10 . The vehicle of claim 1 , wherein the position of the one or more road surface features is a precise position.

11 . A method of operating a vehicle, the method comprising:

while the vehicle is traveling along a road surface, determining a location of a road surface feature, the location of the road surface feature being relative to the vehicle; and

presenting, on a display, the location of the road surface feature on the road surface.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein presenting the location of the road surface feature comprises presenting a graphical representation of the road surface feature on the display.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the display is a heads-up display.

14 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising presenting, on the display a projected tire path of at least one tire of the vehicle.

15 . The method of claim 14 , further comprising, based on the projected tire path of the at least one tire of the vehicle, adjusting a steering angle of a steering wheel of the vehicle to avoid the road surface feature.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the road surface feature is at least partially obscured by another object.

17 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising:

while the vehicle is traveling along the road surface, determining, using at least one remote sensor, a location, relative to the road surface, of at least one other vehicle; and

presenting, on a display, the determined location of the at least one other vehicle relative to an image of the road surface.

18 . A method of operating a vehicle under conditions of poor visibility, the method comprising:

while the vehicle is traveling along a road surface, determining, using at least one remote sensor, a location, relative to the road surface, of at least one other vehicle; and

presenting, on a display, the determined location of the at least one other vehicle relative to an image of the road surface.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein the display is a heads-up display or a monitor.

20 . The method of claim 18 , wherein presenting, on the display, the determined location of the at least one other vehicle comprises presenting a graphical representation of the at least one other vehicle on the display.
