Abstract

Material handling devices are disclosed. Specifically disclosed is an improved hand truck wheel axle arrangement in which the axle supports are sized and formed to nest an axle tube that houses the axle. The wheel axle arrangement allows the axle to be easily moved and replaced while providing extra strength and stiffness to the axle. Also disclosed are the use of and placement of axle bushings.

Claims (41)

1 . A hand truck, comprising:

a frame;

a handle;

a toe plate;

a pair of wheels;

an axle;

an axle tube; and

a pair of axle supports mounted to the frame;

wherein the axle tube is rectangular in cross section; and

the axle support comprises an axle tube inset.

2 . The hand truck of claim 1 wherein the axle tube cross section is substantially square with four flat sides.

3 . The hand truck of claim 2 wherein the axle tube inset is V-shaped with two flat sides.

4 . The hand truck of claim 3 wherein the axle tube inset sides are sized to accommodate two of the axle tube sides.

5 . The hand truck of claim 4 wherein the axle tube is unibody and constructed of metal.

6 . The hand truck of claim 5 wherein the axle support in unibody and constructed of metal.

7 . The hand truck of claim 6 wherein axle tube and axle support are welded together.

8 . The hand truck of claim 1 further comprising a center axle bushing.

9 . The hand truck of claim 8 wherein the axle tube comprises a cavity, the center axle bushing is nested within the cavity, and the axle transits the central axle bushing.

10 . The hand truck of claim 9 wherein the center axle bushing is partially exposed and comprises a grip surface.

11 . The hand truck of claim 10 wherein the center axle tube bushing comprises polypropylene.

12 . An axle mounting arrangement for a hand truck, comprising:

an axle;

an axle tube; and

an axle support mounted to a hand truck frame;

wherein the axle tube is generally square in cross section with four flat sides; and

the axle support comprises an axle tube inset.

13 . The axle mounting arrangement for a hand truck of claim 12 wherein the axle tube inset is V-shaped with two flat sides.

14 . The axle mounting arrangement for a hand truck of claim 13 wherein the axle tube inset sides are sized to accommodate two of the axle tube sides.

15 . The axle mounting arrangement for a hand truck of claim 14 further comprising a center axle bushing.

16 . The axle mounting arrangement for a hand truck of claim 15 wherein the axle tube comprises a cavity, the center axle bushing is at least partially within the cavity, and the axle transits the central axle bushing.

17 . The axle mounting arrangement for a hand truck of claim 16 wherein the center axle bushing is partially exposed and comprises a grip surface.

18 . A hand truck, comprising:

a frame;

a pair of axle supports mounted to the frame;

a toe plate;

a pair of wheels operably connected to an axle; and

an axle tube mounted to the pair of axle supports and housing the axle, the axle tube comprising a cross sectional shape;

wherein each axle support comprises an axle tube inset, each axle tube inset comprising a cross sectional shape; and

wherein the axle tube cross sectional shape nests within each axle support inset cross sectional shape.

19 . The hand truck of claim 18 wherein the axle tube cross sectional shape is square and having four sides and each axle tube inset cross sectional shape is V-shaped and the axle tube inset sides is sized to accommodate two of the axle tube sides.

20 . The hand truck of claim 19 wherein the axle tube comprises a center axle bushing seated within an axle tube cavity and partially exposed, wherein the axle transits the axle tube and center axle bushing.
