Abstract

A distributed computer system operates by storing data as encoded blocks in storage units of the distributed computer system at physically different sites and for an indefinite period of time, wherein the encoded blocks are encrypted as a group via a hash-based authentication function. The distributed computer system further operates by receiving, at the storage units of the distributed computer system, an all or nothing transaction (AONT) request associated with the data; and verifying the AONT request, via the hash-based authentication function and based on a decryption of the encoded data blocks stored in the storage units of the distributed computer system at the physically different sites.

Claims (30)

1 . A method comprising:

storing data as encoded blocks in storage units of a distributed computer system at physically different sites and for an indefinite period of time, wherein the encoded blocks are encrypted as a group via a hash-based authentication function;

receiving, at the storage units of the distributed computer system, an all or nothing transaction (AONT) request associated with the data; and

verifying the AONT request, via the hash-based authentication function and based on a decryption of the encoded data blocks stored in the storage units of the distributed computer system at the physically different sites.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a first storage unit of the storage units comprises a solid state memory device.

3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a first storage unit of the storage units comprises temporary storage.

4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein a first storage unit of the storage units comprises a random access memory.

5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the encoded blocks are encoded via a dispersed storage encoding function.

6 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the dispersed encoding function includes a Cauchy-Reed-Solomon encoding.

7 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the dispersed encoding function includes a Reed-Solomon encoding.

8 . The method of claim 5 , wherein the dispersed encoding function includes a forward error-correction encoding.

9 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising assigning one or more additional storage units to the distributed computer system.

10 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the storage units of the distributed computer system are decentralized.

11 . A processing system of a distributed computer system comprising:

a communications interface;

a memory; and

at least one computer processor;

wherein the memory includes instructions for causing the computer processor to perform operations that include:

storing data as encoded blocks in storage units of the distributed computer system at physically different sites and for an indefinite period of time, wherein the encoded blocks are encrypted as a group via a hash-based authentication function;

receiving, at the storage units of the distributed computer system, an all or nothing transaction (AONT) request associated with the data; and

verifying the AONT request, via the hash-based authentication function and based on a decryption of the encoded data blocks stored in the storage units of the distributed computer system at the physically different sites.

12 . The processing system of claim 11 , wherein a first storage unit of the storage units comprises a solid state memory device.

13 . The processing system of claim 11 , wherein a first storage unit of the storage units comprises temporary storage.

14 . The processing system of claim 11 , wherein a first storage unit of the storage units comprises a random access memory.

15 . The processing system of claim 11 , wherein the encoded blocks are encoded via a dispersed storage encoding function.

16 . The processing system of claim 15 , wherein the dispersed encoding function includes a Cauchy-Reed-Solomon encoding.

17 . The processing system of claim 15 , wherein the dispersed encoding function includes a Reed-Solomon encoding.

18 . The processing system of claim 15 , wherein the dispersed encoding function includes a forward error-correction encoding.

19 . The processing system of claim 11 , further comprising assigning one or more additional storage units to the distributed computer system.

20 . The processing system of claim 11 , wherein the storage units of the distributed computer system are decentralized.
