Abstract

A method includes receiving, at a user terminal, from a satellite, a first data packet data unit according to a first downlink modulation and coding scheme for the user terminal, determining, at the user terminal, an error vector magnitude associated with the first data packet data unit, generating, based on the error vector magnitude, a user terminal signal-to-noise ratio, transmitting, by the user terminal to the satellite, an uplink packet data unit, wherein the uplink packet data unit comprises the user terminal signal-to-noise ratio, and receiving a second data packet data unit according to a second downlink modulation and coding scheme.

Claims (26)

1 . A method comprising:

receiving, at a user terminal, from a satellite, a first data packet data unit according to a first downlink modulation and coding scheme for the user terminal;

determining, at the user terminal, an error vector magnitude associated with the first data packet data unit;

generating, based on the error vector magnitude, a user terminal signal-to-noise ratio;

transmitting, by the user terminal to the satellite, an uplink packet data unit, wherein the uplink packet data unit comprises the user terminal signal-to-noise ratio; and

receiving a second data packet data unit according to a second downlink modulation and coding scheme.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising extracting the error vector magnitude from the first data packet data unit.

3 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising applying a formula:

SNR=alpha*prev_SNR+(1−alpha)*current_SNR, wherein alpha is a weighting coefficient, and prev_SNR comprises a previous user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio and current_SNR comprises a current user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio.

4 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a grant from the satellite; and

positioning user data in a frame based on the grant, wherein an uplink scheduler on the satellite uses an uplink modulation and coding scheme when allocating the grant for the user terminal for transmitting data on an uplink channel.

5 . A system comprising:

a processor; and

a computer-readable storage device storing instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receive, at a user terminal, from a satellite, a first data packet data unit according to a first downlink modulation and coding scheme for the user terminal;

determine, at the user terminal, an error vector magnitude associated with the first data packet data unit;

generate, based on the error vector magnitude, a user terminal signal-to-noise ratio;

transmit, by the user terminal to the satellite, an uplink packet data unit, wherein the uplink packet data unit comprises the user terminal signal-to-noise ratio; and

receive a second data packet data unit according to a second downlink modulation and coding scheme.

6 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the computer-readable storage device stores additional instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to extract the error vector magnitude from the first data packet data unit.

7 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the computer-readable storage device stores additional instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to generate an uplink signal-to-noise-ratio by applying a formula:

SNR=alpha*prev_SNR+(1−alpha)*current_SNR, wherein alpha is a weighting coefficient, and prev_SNR comprises a previous user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio and current_SNR comprises a current user terminal signal-to-noise-ratio.

8 . The system of claim 5 , wherein the computer-readable storage device stores additional instructions which, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to:

receive a grant from the satellite; and

position user data in a frame based on the grant, wherein an uplink scheduler on the satellite uses an uplink modulation and coding scheme when allocating the grant for the system for transmitting data on an uplink channel.
