Abstract

An apparatus includes a catheter sized to fit within a wall of a blood vessel, wherein the catheter includes a balloon including one or more electrohydraulic devices coupled to the catheter within the balloon, and wherein the one or more electrohydraulic devices produce shock waves that propagate away from the catheter toward the wall of the blood vessel, and one or more radiopaque markers coupled to the catheter to identify the location of the balloon.

Claims (28)

1 . An apparatus comprising:

a blood vessel catheter including a distal end insertable into a blood vessel and a proximal end opposite the distal end;

an electrohydraulic device configured to produce shock waves within a non-perforated balloon coupled to and inflatable around the catheter between the distal end and the proximal end, wherein the distal end of the catheter extends beyond a sealed end of the balloon, and wherein the balloon includes a liquid inlet;

a first radiopaque marker coupled to the catheter that visually indicates a first end of the balloon nearer the proximal end of the catheter and a second radiopaque marker coupled to the catheter that visually indicates a second distal end of the catheter nearer the distal end of the catheter; and

the electrohydraulic device positioned within the balloon between the first and second radiopaque markers.

2 . A method of treating a target area of a blood vessel wall comprising delivering shock waves with the apparatus of claim 1 to the target area.

3 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising delivering non-focused pressure shock waves.

4 . A method of treating a blood vessel wall with the apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising providing liquid into the balloon after aligning the catheter and electrohydraulic at a desired position relative to the target area with guidance by the one or more radiopaque markers and removing liquid from the balloon after delivering shock waves to the target area.

5 . The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising an electronic controller connection to the electrohydraulic shock wave device.

6 . An apparatus comprising:

a blood vessel catheter including a distal end insertable into a blood vessel and a proximal end opposite the distal end;

a plurality of electrohydraulic shock wave devices, wherein each electrohydraulic device of said plurality is configured to produce shock waves within a non-perforated balloon coupled to and inflatable around the catheter between the distal end and the proximal end, wherein the distal end of the catheter extends beyond a sealed end of the balloon, and wherein the balloon includes a liquid inlet;

a first radiopaque marker coupled to the catheter that visually indicates a first end of the balloon nearer the proximal end of the catheter and a second radiopaque marker coupled to the catheter that visually indicates a second distal end of the catheter nearer the distal end of the catheter; and

the electrohydraulic device positioned within the balloon between the first and second radiopaque markers.

7 . The apparatus of claim 6 , further comprising an electronic controller connection to the plurality of electrohydraulic devices.

8 . The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the electronic controller connection is configured to generate simultaneous, consecutive, or a predetermined pattern of electrical discharges at the plurality of electrohydraulic devices via software of the electronic controller.

9 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein each of the electrohydraulic devices of the plurality includes a pair of electrodes with a spark gap.

10 . A method of treating a target area of a blood vessel wall with the apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising providing liquid into the balloon after aligning the catheter and the plurality of electrohydraulic devices at a desired position relative to the target area with guidance by the first radiopaque marker and the second radiopaque marker and removing liquid from the balloon after delivering shock wave treatment.

11 . The apparatus of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of electrohydraulic devices is configured to produce non-focused shock waves.

12 . The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the plurality of electrohydraulic devices is configured to produce non-focused shock waves.

13 . The apparatus of claim 8 , wherein the plurality of electrohydraulic devices is configured to produce non-focused shock waves.

14 . The apparatus of claim 9 , wherein the plurality of electrohydraulic devices is configured to produce non-focused shock waves.

15 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the plurality of electrohydraulic devices is configured to produce non-focused shock waves.

16 . The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the electrohydraulic device is configured to produce non-focused shock waves.

17 . The apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the electrohydraulic device is configured to produce non-focused shock waves.

18 . The method of claim 4 , wherein the electrohydraulic device is configured to produce non-focused shock waves.

19 . A method of treating a target area of a blood vessel wall comprising delivering shock waves with the apparatus of claim 6 to the target area.

20 . A method of treating a target area of a blood vessel wall comprising delivering shock waves with the apparatus of claim 11 to the target area.
