Abstract

A system includes a head of a computer numerically controlled machine configured to deliver electromagnetic energy sufficient to cause a change in a material at least partially contained within an interior space of the computer numerically controlled machine. The system further includes an optical system comprising a plurality of optical elements in the computer numerically controlled machine. The plurality of optical elements are oriented at a fixed angle to each other to deliver the electromagnetic energy from the head to the material.

Claims (24)

1 . A computer numerically controlled machine comprising:

an energy source configured to emit electromagnetic energy;

a sealed optical system comprising:

a housing;

a first optical element enclosed within the housing;

a second optical element enclosed within the housing, the second optical element arranged at a fixed angle relative to the first optical element;

one or more optical windows in the housing that are positioned such that (i) electromagnetic energy emitted by the energy source enters the housing by passing through one of the one or more optical windows and (ii) electromagnetic energy that is redirected by the first optical element and the second optical element exits the housing by passing through one of the one or more optical windows; and

a head configured to deliver, to a material at least partially contained within an interior space of the computer numerically controlled machine, electromagnetic energy that exits the housing of the sealed optical system, to thereby cause a change in the material.

2 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein one or both of a position and an orientation of the sealed optical system is adjustable relative to the energy source.

3 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 2 , wherein the sealed optical system is adjustable relative to the energy source via one or more pivots configured to rotate the sealed optical system.

4 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 3 , wherein adjusting the sealed optical system relative to the energy source via the one or more pivots adjusts a separation between electromagnetic energy entering the housing and electromagnetic energy exiting the housing.

5 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein each of the first optical element and the second optical element comprises one or both of a mirror and a lens.

6 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , further comprising one or more spacers to achieve the fixed angle of the second optical element relative to the first optical element.

7 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein the fixed angle of the second optical element relative to the first optical element is 90 degrees.

8 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein the first optical element and the second optical element are disposed in a mount.

9 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein the first optical element is mounted by at least one of welding, screwing, bolting, and gluing.

10 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein the head, the energy source, and the sealed optical system are coupled to a moving rail of the computer numerically controlled machine.

11 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 10 , wherein the head, the energy source, and the sealed optical system are configured to move in tandem along the moving rail to reduce a length of a path of electromagnetic energy between the energy source and the head.

12 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein a center of mass of the first optical element is positioned at a center of mass of the sealed optical system.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein the sealed optical element comprises a mount housing for the first optical element, the mount housing comprising one or more cutouts arranged to position the center of mass of the sealed optical system at the center of mass of the first optical element.

14 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein the sealed optical element comprises a mount housing for the first optical element, wherein the mount housing comprises an elastic fixture.

15 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein the sealed optical system prevents the first optical element and the second optical element from being exposed to contaminants.

16 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein the one or more aperture windows are formed from a zinc selenide.

17 . The computer numerically controlled machine of claim 1 , wherein the fixed angle of the second optical element relative to the first optical element causes electromagnetic energy exiting the housing to be substantially parallel to electromagnetic energy entering the housing.
