Abstract

Data analysis system with highly dynamic and interactive data analysis user interfaces which enable data analysts to quickly and efficiently explore large volume data sources. The system enables the user to investigate large volumes of data over many different paths of analysis while maintaining detailed and retraceable steps taken by the user over the course of an investigation, as captured via the user's queries and user interaction with the user interfaces provided by the data analysis system. Data analysis paths may involve exploration of high volume data sets. The data analyst may pursue a data analysis path that involves, among other things, applying filters, joining to other tables in a database, viewing interactive data visualizations, and so on. The data analysis system enables a user to refresh or insert a node in a workflow. The data analysis system further provides data editing, reporting, enrichment, expression language, and charting functionality.

Claims (51)

1 . A computer-implemented method comprising:

accessing a first data analysis graph comprising first one or more data nodes, wherein the first one or more data nodes includes a first data node;

causing presentation, in a user interface, of first one or more user interface boards corresponding to the first one or more data nodes, wherein the first one or more user interface boards includes a first user interface board corresponding to the first data node;

determining that a data source, associated with the first data node and from which data is drawn for displaying the first user interface board, has updated to an updated data source;

in response to determining that the data source has updated, causing presentation, in the user interface, of a notification and/or indicator; and

in response to user selection of the notification and/or indicator, causing update of the first data node and the first user interface board based on the updated data source.

2 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the notification and/or indicator comprises a staleness alert and/or refresh control.

3 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising:

receiving a user input selecting to auto refresh the first user interface board; and

in response to receiving the user input, causing automatic update of the first data node and the first user interface board in response to the data source being updated.

4 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the data source has updated to the updated data source comprises:

monitoring the data source for updates.

5 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein determining that the data source has updated to the updated data source comprises:

receiving a notification that the data source has updated.

6 . The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein the first data node includes metadata that indicates the data source as a source for the data for displaying the first user interface board.

7 . The computer-implemented method of claim 6 , wherein determining that the data source has updated to the updated data source further comprises:

in response to receiving the notification that the data source has updated, determining, based on the metadata of the first data node, to update the first data node and the first user interface board.

8 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising:

further in response to user selection of the notification and/or indicator, creating a new first data source.

9 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the first data node comprises at least one of: a summary node, a table node, a histogram node, a distribution node, a time series node, a grid node, a heatmap node, a pivot table node, a filter node, a column editor node, an enrich node, a link node, a set math node, or an export node.

10 . The computer-implemented method of claim 1 further comprising:

accessing a second data analysis graph comprising second one or more data nodes; and

causing presentation, in the user interface, of second one or more user interface boards corresponding to the second one or more data nodes,

wherein the first one or more user interface boards are displayed in a first column of the user interface, and

wherein the second one or more user interface boards are displayed in a second column of the user interface.

11 . A computer system comprising:

one or more computer processors configured to execute software code to cause the computer system to perform operations comprising:

accessing a first data analysis graph comprising first one or more data nodes, wherein the first one or more data nodes includes a first data node;

causing presentation, in a user interface, of first one or more user interface boards corresponding to the first one or more data nodes, wherein the first one or more user interface boards includes a first user interface board corresponding to the first data node;

determining that a data source, associated with the first data node and from which data is drawn for displaying the first user interface board, has updated to an updated data source;

in response to determining that the data source has updated, causing presentation, in the user interface, of a notification and/or indicator; and

in response to user selection of the notification and/or indicator, causing update of the first data node and the first user interface board based on the updated data source.

12 . The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the notification and/or indicator comprises a staleness alert and/or refresh control.

13 . The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

receiving a user input selecting to auto refresh the first user interface board; and

in response to receiving the user input, causing automatic update of the first data node and the first user interface board in response to the data source being updated.

14 . The computer system of claim 11 , wherein determining that the data source has updated to the updated data source comprises:

monitoring the data source for updates.

15 . The computer system of claim 11 , wherein determining that the data source has updated to the updated data source comprises:

receiving a notification that the data source has updated.

16 . The computer system of claim 15 , wherein the first data node includes metadata that indicates the data source as a source for the data for displaying the first user interface board.

17 . The computer system of claim 16 , wherein determining that the data source has updated to the updated data source further comprises:

in response to receiving the notification that the data source has updated, determining, based on the metadata of the first data node, to update the first data node and the first user interface board.

18 . The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

further in response to user selection of the notification and/or indicator, creating a new first data source.

19 . The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the first data node comprises at least one of: a summary node, a table node, a histogram node, a distribution node, a time series node, a grid node, a heatmap node, a pivot table node, a filter node, a column editor node, an enrich node, a link node, a set math node, or an export node.

20 . The computer system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

accessing a second data analysis graph comprising second one or more data nodes; and

causing presentation, in the user interface, of second one or more user interface boards corresponding to the second one or more data nodes,

wherein the first one or more user interface boards are displayed in a first column of the user interface, and

wherein the second one or more user interface boards are displayed in a second column of the user interface.
