Abstract

Particles of non-woven graft materials for use in specialized surgical procedures such as soft tissue repair and wound management procedures, methods for making the powder, and methods for repairing tissue such as neurological tissue using the powder are disclosed. The particles can advantageously be used to fill irregular shaped areas or can be used in conjunction with non-woven graft materials.

Claims (28)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 - 23 . (canceled)

24 . A method of tissue repair in an individual in need thereof, comprising:

applying a plurality of particles to a wound, the plurality of particles comprising:

a first fiber composition and a second fiber composition, wherein the first and second fiber composition each independently comprise a resorbable polymer;

an average diameter of less than 5000 μm;

wherein:

the plurality of particles comprise a nanofiber matrix, and

the plurality of particles are configured to improve wound healing.

25 . The method of claim 24 , wherein applying a plurality of particles to a wound comprises packing, spreading, scattering, sprinkling, or pouring the particles onto the wound.

26 . The method of claim 25 , wherein applying a plurality of particles to a wound comprises pouring the plurality of particles over the wound.

27 . The method of claim 25 , wherein applying a plurality of particles to a wound comprises packing one or more layers of particles at the wound.

28 . The method of claim 27 , wherein the thickness of the one or more layers of particles packed at the wound is between about 100 μm and about 700 μm.

29 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of particles are applied to a suture line.

30 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of particles are used as soft tissue filler.

31 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of particles are mixed in solution before being applied to the wound.

32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein applying the plurality of particles to a wound comprises injecting the solution into the wound.

33 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of particles are incorporated into a hydrogel before being applied to the wound.

34 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of particles are mixed with other fibers or nonfibrous structures.

35 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of particles are configured to be applied to irregularly-shaped wounds.

36 . The method of claim 24 , further comprising applying a graft on top of the plurality of particles.

37 . The method of claim 36 , wherein the graft is a sheet of electrospun graft material.

38 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the plurality of particles comprise a plurality of pores comprising a mean pore size of from about 10 μm 2 to about 300 μm 2 .

39 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the first fiber composition and the second fiber composition each have a mean fiber diameter of less than 5 μm.

40 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the first fiber composition comprises poly (glycolic acid), poly (L-lactic acid), poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid), or combinations thereof.

41 . The method of claim 40 , wherein the second fiber composition comprises polycaprolactone, poly (L-lactide-co-ϵ-caprolactone), poly (dioxanone), or combinations thereof.

42 . The method of claim 41 , wherein the first fiber composition comprises poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) and the second fiber composition comprises poly (dioxanone).

43 . The method of claim 24 , wherein the first and second fiber compositions are configured to break down into one or more acidic byproducts when applied to a tissue site, and the one or more acidic byproducts are selected from the group consisting of monomers and oligomers comprising: lactic acid, glycolic acid, 6-hydroxycaproic acid, caproic acid, 4-hydroxybutyrate, 2-hydroxyethoxyacetic acid, glyoxylic acid, and oxalic acid.
