Abstract

A computer-implemented method is provided for enabling virtual gameplay. Access is provided to at least one video game in which a player is able to interact with the video game according to a storyline. A player location is detected and stored. A local element is retrieved from a database based on the player location and the local element is correlated to a local element script actuatable in the video game. This local element script is retrieved and actuated in the video game to supplement or replace the video game's storyline.

30 . A non-transitory, computer-readable media having stored thereon instructions wherein the instructions, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to perform steps comprising:

using a first weather condition associated with a determined real world geographic location of a player playing a video game providing a virtual gameplay to cause a first one of a plurality of local element scripts to be retrieve from a database coupled to the computing device; and

causing the retrieved first one of the plurality of local element scripts to be actuated to modify a type of non-player character that will appear during the virtual gameplay.

The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, further cause the computing device to perform the steps of responding to a weather condition change at the determined real world geographic location by using a second weather condition associated with the determined real world geographic location to retrieve from a database coupled to the computing device a second one of the plurality of local element scripts and causing the retrieved second one of the plurality of local element scripts to further modify the type of non-player character that will appear during the virtual gameplay.

32 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the first weather condition is obtained by the computing device from a news feed.

33 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the first weather condition is retrieved by the computing device from a website.

34 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the real world geographic location of a player corresponds to a coordinate obtained via use of a global positioning sensor.

35 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the real world geographic location of a player corresponds to a device identifier for a gaming device being used to play the video game.

36 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 35 , wherein the computing device is the gaming device.

37 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the real world geographic location is a billing address linked to the player.

The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, cause the computing device to perform the further step of determining the real world player geographic location during a login process associated with the computing device.

39 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, cause the computing device to perform the further step of periodically determining the real world geographic location during gameplay.

40 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, cause the computing device to perform the further step of causing the first weather condition to be shown as a part of the video game during virtual gameplay.

41 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 30 , wherein the type of non-player character is limiting to appearing during the virtual gameplay to only when the first weather condition is associated with the determined real world geographic location.

42 . A non-transitory, computer-readable media having stored thereon instructions wherein the instructions, when executed by a computing device, cause the computing device to perform steps comprising:

using a first weather condition associated with a determined real world geographic location of a player playing a video game providing a virtual gameplay to cause a first one of a plurality of local element scripts to be retrieve from a database coupled to the computing device; and

causing the retrieved first one of the plurality of local element scripts to be actuated to modify a virtual character statistic of a non-player character that will appear during the virtual gameplay.

The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, cause the computing device to perform the further steps of responding to a weather condition change at the determined real world geographic location by using a second weather condition associated with the determined real world player geographic location to retrieve from a database coupled to the computing device a second one of the plurality of local element scripts and causing the retrieved second one of the plurality of local element scripts to be actuated to further modify the virtual character statistic of the non-player character that will appear during the virtual gameplay.

44 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the first weather condition is obtained by the computing device from a news feed.

45 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the first weather condition is retrieved by the computing device from a website.

46 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the real world geographic location of a player corresponds to a coordinate obtained via use of a global positioning sensor.

47 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the real world geographic location of a player corresponds to a device identifier for a gaming device being used to play the video game.

48 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 47 , wherein the computing device is the gaming device.

49 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the real world geographic location is a billing address linked to the player.

The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, cause the computing device to perform the further step of determining the real world player geographic location during a login process associated with the computing device.

51 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, cause the computing device to perform the further step of periodically determining the real world geographic location during gameplay.

52 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the instructions, when executed by the computing device, cause the computing device to perform the further step of causing the first weather condition to be shown as a part of the video game during virtual gameplay.

53 . The non-transitory, computer-readable media of claim 42 , wherein the type of non-player character is limiting to appearing during the virtual gameplay to only when the first weather condition is associated with the determined real world geographic location.
