Abstract

One variation of a method for serving interactive content to a user includes, at a visual element inserted into a document accessed by a computing device: loading a first frame from a digital video; in response to a scroll-down event that moves the visual element upward from a bottom of a window rendered on the computing device toward a top of the window, seeking from the first frame through a subset of frames in the digital video in a first direction at a rate corresponding to a scroll rate of the scroll-down event, the subset of frames spanning a duration of the digital video corresponding to a length of the scroll-down event; and, in response to termination of the scroll-down event with the visual element remaining in view within the window, playing the digital video forward from a last frame in the subset of frames in the digital video.

Claims (174)

1 . A computer readable medium with software recorded thereon for configuring a computing device with a screen to have a functionality comprising:

when a visual element embedded in an electronic document is located at an initial vertical position within the screen's viewing window, displaying a first image of a plurality of images via the visual element;

upon a first scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a second vertical position above the initial vertical position, displaying a second image of the plurality of images via the visual element; and

upon a second scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a vertical position below the second vertical position, displaying the first image of the plurality of images via the visual element.

2 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 1 , wherein the first and second images to be displayed comprise separate image files.

3 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 1 , wherein the first and second images to be displayed comprise portions of a single image file.

4 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 1 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive data about the first and second scroll events.

5 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 1 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon data about the one or more of the scroll events.

6 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 1 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

7 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 1 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

8 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 1 , wherein:

the viewing window comprises a plurality of pixel rows;

the initial vertical position corresponds to a first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows;

the second vertical position corresponds to a second set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows; and

the vertical position below the second vertical position corresponds to the first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows.

9 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 8 , wherein:

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows upon the first and second scroll events; and

the hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon the datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows received.

10 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 1 , wherein:

the visual element is defined by a height; and

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon a percentage of the height located within the viewing window.

11 . A method at a computing device with a screen comprising:

displaying a portion of an electronic document on a viewing window of the screen;

displaying a visual element embedded in the electronic document at an initial vertical position within the screen's viewing window, wherein a first image of a plurality of images is displayed via the visual element;

upon a first scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a second vertical position above the initial vertical position, displaying a second image of the plurality of images via the visual element; and

upon a second scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a vertical position below the second vertical position, displaying the first image of the plurality of images via the visual element.

12 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first and second images displayed comprise separate image files.

13 . The method of claim 11 , wherein the first and second images displayed comprise portions of a single image file.

14 . The method of claim 11 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives data about the first and second scroll events.

15 . The method of claim 11 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon data about the one or more of the scroll events.

16 . The method of claim 11 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

17 . The method of claim 11 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

18 . The method claim 11 , wherein:

the viewing window comprises a plurality of pixel rows;

the initial vertical position corresponds to a first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows;

the second vertical position corresponds to a second set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows; and

the vertical position below the second vertical position corresponds to the first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows.

19 . The method of claim 18 , wherein:

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows upon the first and second scroll events; and

the hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon the datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows received.

20 . The method of claim 11 , wherein:

the visual element is defined by a height; and

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon a percentage of the height located within the viewing window.

21 . A method of providing code to another party, the code for configuring a computing device with a screen to have a functionality comprising:

Displaying a visual element embedded in an electronic document at an initial vertical position within the screen's viewing window, wherein a first image of a plurality of images is displayed via the visual element;

upon a first scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a second vertical position above the initial vertical position, displaying a second images of the plurality of images via the visual element; and

upon a second scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a vertical position below the second vertical position, displaying the first image of the plurality of images via the visual element.

22 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the first and second images displayed comprise separate image files.

23 . The method of claim 21 , wherein the first and second images displayed comprise portions of a single image file.

24 . The method of claim 21 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives data about the first and second scroll events.

25 . The method of claim 21 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon data about the one or more of the scroll events.

26 . The method of claim 21 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

27 . The method of claim 21 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

28 . The method of claim 21 , wherein:

the viewing window comprises a plurality of pixel rows;

the initial vertical position corresponds to a first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows;

the second vertical position corresponds to a second set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows; and

the vertical position below the second vertical position corresponds to the first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows.

29 . The method of claim 28 , wherein:

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows upon the first and second scroll events; and

the hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon the datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows received.

30 . The method of claim 21 , wherein:

the visual element is defined by a height; and

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon a percentage of the height located within the viewing window.

31 . A method for facilitating the display of images in the context of a web page or application program accessible via a computer network, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of images to be displayed via a visual element located within an electronic document visible on a computing device with a screen accessible through the computer network;

prior to providing the plurality of images, providing code for configuring the computing device with a screen to be capable of:

when the visual element is located at an initial vertical position within the viewing window, a first image of the plurality of images is displayed via the visual element;

upon a first scroll event that locates the visual element at a second vertical position above the initial vertical position within the viewing window, a second image of the plurality of images is displayed via the visual element; and

upon a second scroll event that locates the visual element at a vertical position below the second vertical position within the viewing window, the first image of the plurality of images is displayed via the visual element.

32 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the first and second images to be displayed comprise separate image files.

33 . The method of claim 31 , wherein the first and second images to be displayed comprise portions of a single image file.

34 . The method of claim 31 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive data about the first and second scroll events.

35 . The method of claim 31 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon data about the one or more of the scroll events.

36 . The method of claim 31 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

37 . The method of claim 31 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

38 . The method of claim 31 , wherein:

the viewing window comprises a plurality of pixel rows;

the initial vertical position corresponds to a first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows;

the second vertical position corresponds to a second set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows; and

the vertical position below the second vertical position corresponds to the first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows.

39 . The method of claim 38 , wherein:

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows upon the first and second scroll events; and

the hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon the datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows received.

40 . The method of claim 31 , wherein:

the visual element is defined by a height; and

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon a percentage of the height located within the viewing window.

41 . A computer readable medium with software recorded thereon for configuring a computing device with a screen to have a functionality comprising:

when a visual element embedded in an electronic document is located at an initial vertical position within the screen's viewing window, displaying a first image of a plurality of images via the visual element;

upon a first scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a second vertical position above the initial vertical position, displaying a second image of the plurality of images via the visual element; and

upon a second scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a vertical position above the second vertical position, displaying a third image of the plurality of images via the visual element.

42 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 41 , wherein the first, second, and third images to be displayed comprise separate image files.

43 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 41 , wherein the first, second, and third images to be displayed comprise portions of a single image file.

44 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 41 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive data about the first and second scroll events.

45 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 41 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon data about the one or more of the scroll events.

46 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 41 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

47 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 41 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

48 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 41 , wherein:

the viewing window comprises a plurality of pixel rows;

the initial vertical position corresponds to a first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows;

the second vertical position corresponds to a second set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows; and

the vertical position above the second vertical position corresponds to a third set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows.

49 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 48 , wherein:

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows upon the first and second scroll events; and

the hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon the datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows received.

50 . The computer readable medium with software recorded thereon of claim 41 , wherein:

the visual element is defined by a height; and

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon a percentage of the height located within the viewing window.

51 . A method at a computing device with a screen comprising:

displaying a portion of an electronic document on a viewing window of the screen;

displaying a visual element embedded in the electronic document at an initial vertical position within the screen's viewing window, wherein a first image of a plurality of images is displayed via the visual element;

upon a first scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a second vertical position above the initial vertical position, displaying a second image of the plurality of images via the visual element; and

upon a second scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a vertical position above the second vertical position, displaying a third image of the plurality of images via the visual element.

52 . The method of claim 51 , wherein the first, second, and third images displayed comprise separate image files.

53 . The method of claim 51 , wherein the first, second, and third images displayed comprise portions of a single image file.

54 . The method of claim 51 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives data about the first and second scroll events.

55 . The method of claim 51 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon data about the one or more of the scroll events.

56 . The method of claim 51 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

57 . The method of claim 51 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

58 . The method of claim 51 , wherein:

the viewing window comprises a plurality of pixel rows;

the initial vertical position corresponds to a first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows;

the second vertical position corresponds to a second set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows; and

the vertical position above the second vertical position corresponds to a third set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows.

59 . The method of claim 58 , wherein:

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows upon the first and second scroll events; and

the hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon the datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows received.

60 . The method of claim 51 , wherein:

the visual element is defined by a height; and

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon a percentage of the height located within the viewing window.

61 . A method of providing code to another party, the code for configuring a computing device with a screen to have a functionality comprising:

Displaying a visual element embedded in an electronic document at an initial vertical position within the screen's viewing window, wherein a first image of a plurality of images is displayed via the visual element;

upon a first scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a second vertical position above the initial vertical position, displaying a second images of the plurality of images via the visual element; and

upon a second scroll event that locates the visual element within the screen's viewing window at a vertical position above the second vertical position, displaying a third image of the plurality of images via the visual element.

62 . The method of claim 61 , wherein the first, second, and third images displayed comprise separate image files.

63 . The method of claim 61 , wherein the first, second, and third images displayed comprise portions of a single image file.

64 . The method of claim 61 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives data about the first and second scroll events.

65 . The method of claim 61 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon data about the one or more of the scroll events.

66 . The method of claim 61 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

67 . The method of claim 61 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

68 . The method of claim 61 , wherein:

the viewing window comprises a plurality of pixel rows;

the initial vertical position corresponds to a first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows;

the second vertical position corresponds to a second set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows; and

the vertical position above the second vertical position corresponds to a third set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows.

69 . The method of claim 68 , wherein:

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element receives datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows upon the first and second scroll events; and

the hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon the datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows received.

70 . The method of claim 61 , wherein:

the visual element is defined by a height; and

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon a percentage of the height located within the viewing window.

71 . A method for facilitating the display of images in the context of a web page or application program accessible via a computer network, the method comprising:

providing a plurality of images to be displayed via a visual element located within an electronic document visible on a computing device with a screen accessible through the computer network;

prior to providing the plurality of images, providing code for configuring the computing device with a screen to be capable of:

when the visual element is located at an initial vertical position within the viewing window, a first image of the plurality of images is displayed via the visual element;

upon a first scroll event that locates the visual element at a second vertical position above the initial vertical position within the viewing window, a second image of the plurality of images is displayed via the visual element; and

upon a second scroll event that locates the visual element at a vertical position above the second vertical position within the viewing window, a third image of the plurality of images is displayed via the visual element.

72 . The method of claim 71 , wherein the first, second, and third images to be displayed comprise separate image files.

73 . The method of claim 71 , wherein the first, second, and third images to be displayed comprise portions of a single image file.

74 . The method of claim 71 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive data about the first and second scroll events.

75 . The method of claim 71 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon data about the one or more of the scroll events.

76 . The method of claim 71 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

77 . The method of claim 71 , wherein a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon data about the vertical position of the visual element within the viewing window.

78 . The method of claim 71 , wherein:

the viewing window comprises a plurality of pixel rows;

the initial vertical position corresponds to a first set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows;

the second vertical position corresponds to a second set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows; and

the vertical position above the second vertical position corresponds to a third set of one or more of the plurality of pixel rows.

79 . The method of claim 78 , wherein:

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to receive datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows upon the first and second scroll events; and

the hardware/software combination operating the visual element is configured to select which image to display based upon the datum or data concerning one or more pixel rows received.

80 . The method of claim 71 , wherein:

the visual element is defined by a height; and

a hardware/software combination operating the visual element selects which image to display based upon a percentage of the height located within the viewing window.
