Abstract

An apparatus and mechanism to manage multi-modal real-time or quasi real-time sessions such as voice, video, instant messaging, or web-conferencing across multiple devices through a simple subscription to a session management service. A user can subscribe to the service from many devices (e.g. mobile device, desk phone, personal computer, internet appliance, internet TV, communication terminal, etc.) and through the service seamlessly move sessions back and forth between subscribed devices. In a preferred embodiment, a user utilizes a “virtual slider” in a simple “two touch” procedure to effectuate the movement of a communication session from one device to another device via the service.

21 . A computer-implemented method for managing real-time communication sessions, comprising:

maintaining a real-time communication session between a first device and a second device via a server;

receiving location data indicative of a proximity of the first device to a third device;

responsive to the received location data, causing to display, on the first device, an indication that the third device is capable to participate in the real-time communication session;

receiving a user input from the first device; and

responsive to receiving the user input, routing the real-time communication session from the server to the third device.

22 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , further comprising: in response to receiving the user input, causing the indication to show that the third device is currently used for the real-time communication session with the second device.

23 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein the location data is periodically received from at least one of the first device or the third device.

24 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein the location data is based on a wireless access point, an Internet Protocol (IP) address, an IP subnet, a Global Positioning System (GPS) data, or a mobile service provider.

25 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , further comprising:

determining media capabilities of the third device; and

wherein routing the real-time communication session is based on the media capabilities of the third device.

26 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein routing the real-time communication session comprises routing audio data, video data, or text data from the third device to the second device.

27 . The computer-implemented method of claim 21 , wherein the first device and the third device are associated with a same individual that provided the user input.

28 . A non-transitory, computer-readable medium, storing instructions for managing real-time communication sessions that, when executed by a processor, cause:

maintaining a real-time communication session between a first device and a second device via a server;

receiving location data indicative of a proximity of the first device to a third device;

responsive to the received location data, causing to display, on the first device, an indication that the third device is capable to participate in the real-time communication session;

receiving a user input from the first device; and

responsive to receiving the user input, routing the real-time communication session from the server to the third device.

29 . The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the instructions further comprise: in response to receiving the user input, causing the indication to show that the third device is currently used for the real-time communication session with the second device.

30 . The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the location data is periodically received from at least one of the first device or the third device.

31 . The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the location data is based on a wireless access point, an Internet Protocol (IP) address, an IP subnet, a Global Positioning System (GPS) data, or a mobile service provider.

32 . The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the instructions further comprise:

determining media capabilities of the third device; and

wherein routing the real-time communication session is based on the media capabilities of the third device.

33 . The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 28 , wherein routing the real-time communication session comprises routing audio data, video data, or text data from the second device to the third device.

34 . The non-transitory, computer-readable medium of claim 28 , wherein the first device and the third device are associated with a same individual that provided the user input.

35 . A system for managing real-time communication sessions, comprising:

a processor;

a memory operatively connected to the processor and storing instructions for managing real-time communication sessions, the instructions, when executed by the processor, cause:

maintaining a real-time communication session between a first device and a second device via a server;

receiving location data indicative of a proximity of the first device to a third device;

responsive to the received location data, causing to display, on the first device, an indication that the third device is capable to participate in the real-time communication session;

receiving a user input from the first device; and

responsive to receiving the user input, routing the real-time communication session from the server to the third device.

36 . The system of claim 35 , wherein the instructions further comprise: in response to receiving the user input, causing the indication to show that the third device is currently used for the real-time communication session with the second device.

37 . The system of claim 35 , wherein the location data is periodically received from at least one of the first device or the third device.

38 . The system of claim 35 , wherein the location data is based on a wireless access point, an Internet Protocol (IP) address, an IP subnet, a Global Positioning System (GPS) data, or a mobile service provider.

39 . The system of claim 35 , wherein the instructions further comprise:

determining media capabilities of the third device; and

wherein routing the real-time communication session is based on the media capabilities of the third device.

40 . The system of claim 35 , wherein routing the real-time communication session comprises routing audio data, video data, or text data.
